Needle for my vintage turntable.

First of all, I am a complete noob to turntables. As in, so noobish that I was reading today the difference between a cartridge, headshell, and needle (stylis?).

With regards to units I would play through, it would always be through Vintage Sansui or Marantz units that I have rebuilt.

I got a very cheap Technics 1300 MK II that came along with the other item I really wanted. It seems like a good table; I will replace the caps and check all the resistor values. The light through the window you look at to adjust speed is very very dim.

But I need a needle (or more?). The needle is worn down. I am not sure what this cart/headshell is, or if it is stock, but the needle seems to be an audiotechnica based on the symbol on the front.

Is this cart/headshell decent enough to just replace the needle? I could really use advice on the needle to buy that would fit this headshell and be decent quality for the money.

Any other advice much appreciated!

Definitely an Audio Technica. You might post some pics of the front and sides of the cartridges and hopefully someone will make a positive ID.

AT puts the cartridge name/model on top so you'd need to remove it from the headshell (via removing the two screws) to tell for sure but then you'll need to properly set the overhang and re-align the cartridge in the headshell.

I see different brands of stylis.
Not sure if this is worth buying a needle for. If so, what would be good. Or if I should buy a different product all together instead of spending 30-50 on a stylis for this?

As long as it actually functions, I'd probably get the $30 stylus from LP Gear just because I can't nNOT know how it sounds though I'm sure an Audio Technica VM95E would be a great fit for that table.

Sounds like you are just starting out in this hobby amigo.....I'd get that lpgear stylus, it will probably make you happy.....for now.....later, who knows how far you get into this thing?!?!?

I was going to comment on that as well, my JVC has something similar but this looks like a better execution all around.

That's an expensive headshell for the audiophile Technics EPA tonearm.

Looks like an at71 or 72. Pfanstiehl makes good stylus for audio technica carts. $15 or so for a conical, twice that for an elliptical. The blue color of your old stylus could mean it was a special elliptical, maybe. I would test it for continuity, then get a cheap stylus to see if you like the sound. A better stylus will be more detailed but won't change the flavor of the cartridge very much.
