Netflix opens the gates to 'Super HD' video for all

Months after introducing its "Super HD" streaming option, Netflix's highest-definition picture format is available to all subscribers.
Super HD, Netflix's higher-quality version of the 1080p HD format, was rolled out earlier this year to customers whose Internet service provider was part of Netflix's Open Connect content delivery network, which lets ISPs peer directly with Netflix or cache content locally so it has less distance to travel to reach your home.
Thursday, Netflix said performance data and member requests prompted it to expand the higher bit-rate picture quality to all members.

Hopefully that includes PC / MAC silverlight client plugins. I can get 720p even then sometimes I have to adjust silverlight stream manager to constant bit rate for consistent HD that * usually works fine for me.
.

In any event if bring they bring 1080p to PC/MAC that is good news as long as it is consistent.

I'd be happy if I could just once get thru Breaking Bad during peak hours.

And how does Neflix show Apocalypse Now in HD WITHOUT an HD 5.1 soundtrack??

Gotta admit, tho, the 2.1 sounded real good! My dog was on my lap, ears going back and forth, left to right, during the "napalm" scene. Too funny.

We watched all episodes of Breaking Bad the past 2 weeks and I swear the video was hit or miss. It looked great sometimes and then it was softer sometimes. I checked the auto option that sets our HDMI output and it always said 1080.

Netflix Super HD and 1080p For PC /Mac Update

In PCs you can only play 1080p in the Win8 Netflix app; you're limited to 720p in the web browser player. Win 7 is 1280x764
(720p )only
probably true forXP,Vista also That would remain true, being a limitation of Silverlight PC software. can't say for Macs for sure but Mac's use Silverlight also for Netflix.

Apparently there's a replacement coming for Silverlight-based Netflix player for PC / Mac using HTML5/Webkit, which will play the 1080p encodes in a browser window. At this point it only works in IE on Windows 8.1

The best I can do in win7x64 w/ Chrome Browser is still 1280x720 either at a set constant bit rate or Netflix VBR .
it still takes a minute or two to ramp up to 720p either way

I'm sure silverlight WMC client is same same at least in win 7 . I won't hold my breath too long for the HTML5/Webkit in win 7 anyway .
considering Silverlight EOL is 2020.they have at least 6 yrs to sort it out.

Here is alink to a Netflix test video I found at AVS that has a resolution and bit rate overlay little easier to read than Silverlight stream manager stats

Netflix Looks OK on a 32" no change for me anyway I've been getting 1280x764 all along.
I'm getting a consistent 3K bit rate @1280x764 when it ramps up it does seem to ramp up a whole lot quicker now though on constant bit rate or variable haven't noticed any judder either. although black levels , overall contrast and color saturation can vary with content but thats true of anything streaming or not.
As before you can see HD button on bottom of screen illuminate when not in full screen in Netflix when stream is playing in HD

Maybe they bought some level 3 or similar connectivity I'm thinking ???
Hopefully it will also help with peak time congestion issues .

PS3 should work well and do full 1080p I'll have to check that on the big plasma tomorrow maybe.

Would be nice if M$ updated Silverlight for us win 7 ,XP,Vista holdouts . No reason it cant be
done I wouldn't think ? especially since it has a ~2020 EOL.
Maybe we will get lucky, doubtful though considering they were rude enough to take included WMC out of Win 8 home stands to reason they wouldn't update Silverlight but you never know it would be a selling point for IE on at least the win 7 platform I would like to see
Vista and XP benefit also.
hopefully M$ would enable it to the other browsers and MAC .

I watched some Netflix last night via win 7 PC steady consistent 720p (1280x764) @3K either way in browser or WMC no buffering or other issues.
no limitations w/ PS3 on the big set PS3 can do 1080p Netflix all day.

Picture was decent on bedroom Toshiba 32". Color saturation, contrast and detail were pretty decent. I think in win 7 or less at least we are limited to 3K-3500K bit rate in Silver light more is needed for 1080p . FWIHR win 8 or maybe 8.1 will play Netflix 1080P on PC .

M$ are supposed to bring that feature at least to win 7 Silverlight
player. Considering Silverlight has EOL of 2020 and the large win 7 installed base
that would be cool.

I hope they are boosting their bandwidth, Netflix is often slow for me as it is, often rebuffering to a lower quality level.
I have far fewer problems with Amazons streaming video.
