Never had tubes. Need advice.

A Fisher receiver such as a 500C can easily be had for what your budget is, great sound and parts are easily available.

LOL.....this is a perfect example of where a write-up can destroy a product that might otherwise be most enjoyable for a number of reasons. For P1 (are you related to Ralph Nader??) I can only say that in listening to the ASLs I don't get a sense of any of what those graphs indicate 'should' be there. Perhaps they were testing a faulty amp, or maybe just wanted to kill it for some reason....... (wouldn't be the first time that happened.....). I will say that I've enjoyed the sound from my ASLs.....but I do consider it to have a 'character' all to it's own....just like I do with my Dynaco MK IIs, MK IIIs, and even my Paoli modified MK IIIs.....as well as the Heathkit counterpart amps. All these amps are 50 to 60 watts....PP, and built over 40+ years ago. I don't recall at the moment if the W-7s are ultra-linear or not, but let's face it....the UL design was incorporated to address distortion in PP amps.....and without it some of the 'specs' on those NON-UL amps ain't all that great either! So...that being said.....I DO agree that the struggle for linearity and accuracy are great targets in audio amplification. But...'sterility' can also be a result of that IMHO. Not always.....but 'perhaps' ocassionally. Anyway.....I only referenced the 805s because they are a 45 watt version of an SE amp.....and I don't know of any others in that arena that from a 'power' standpoint can be compared w/ PP amps........or PP/UL amps. I'd love to get some 'stats' on my individual amps.....and if I ever drive to Georgia......I'll take 'em with me. (go figure what I mean by that......). WC
