New 8B & 7C to me !!

Well, just to prove that even a blind squirrel can find a nut once in awhile, I was out "window" shopping yesterday at my fav ham radio store, and came across a nice deal on this pair of Marantz amp and preamp.
The 8B is working fine, but the 7C is needing some "refreshing", so I'm going to be sending them both up to Terry DeWick for a going over. I know the 7C is in need of a "restore" job, but just to be sure, I'm going to have him go through the amp too.
I got the pair for a "really" good price, so I think it's going to be worth it to have them gone over and done up with new caps, etc.
I don't know much about Marantz gear all that much, so I'm going to put it to the experts as to how far I might want to go with this, as I'm really a Mc Man, so all input from you Marantz folks would be appreciated. Will more than likely sell them to get more Mc stuff ! Sorry, but I have a Mc habit :yes:

Oh yeah, I've never seen the silver type knobs from the pics I've found on the 'net, so is this a late model 7C? serial # is
7-16709 : the 8B amp is serial # 7853. Anyone know what year these might have been from ?

The 8B I re-hab'bed was done with a VTV package of parts (not my choosing; the owner's). It deserves better, but it did sound dang fine with even the inexpensive and "non-boutique" Illinois caps. Dang fine.

Those silver knobs on the toggles are from a 7T and not the 7C. It is not uncommon to see them switched but more usual to see someone putting the brown plastic 7C knoobs on the 7T as they look much better. Problem with the plastic is that with time they would get brittle and either crack or not stay on the switch.

Thanks Brian, that makes sense, as I sure hadn't seen any others with the metal ones before; any idea where there might be a database as to what year vs. serial #'s ?

I think those units are from ca. 1962 (late)-63 - probably 1963

The 7C started at #10.000 in 1959 and ended at around #21500 (?) in 1966

The 8B had a switch from the "8" to the "8B" at around '62 - the serial numbers around the switching was around #5900 - maybe slightly less - and continued to approx. #11.000 before the 8B was taken out of production in 1966 AFAIK.

Your #-numbers are:

7C:= #7 - 16709 (mine is 20367) - and mine is stamped 1.sept 1964 on the backside of the front panel (yours probably has a date-stamp there aswell).

8B: = #7853 (mine is 8159) - gives me some idea, that your 8B is a late '63 unit.

Of course my ideas are qualified guessing, but that's the closest I can do.

If you take the faceplate off, the manufacture date is often ink stamped on the aluminum chassis underneath. Been that way on 3 out of 4 that I have seen.
