NEW (Actually in the box) Technics SL-1210MK2 Help

Hi Folks,

I think I found a rare find tonight. I've been reading this forum for a while as a lurker, but the first time posting.

I found a brand new Technics SL-1210MK2 tonight. When I say new, I mean never opened (pics below).

I wanted to see how this compared to the Technics SL-1200MK2 or MK5.

I want to make sure my money was spent properly. I don't ever plan on "DJ'ing" what I'm looking for is a audiophile grade setup to work well with my Denon AVR-4520CI, and Bower and Wilkins CM9 series speakers.

I was originally looking for a Pro-Ject Carbon, but was told these were "BETTER", and I stumbled across them at a store during remodel (they were buried in the back for years unopened).

Would I be better off selling these off, and going with something else? I think I could probably get a good price for them. I haven't installed a stylus yet (need to order that next if I decide to keep this).

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!!

Well I don't know how much you paid, or where you are but I would say that qualifies as as a score!

The 1210 is a 1200 in black and that should be the only difference. The MK5 I think has a better grade of cable but I don't know of other differences. You can upgrade the wiring if you wish and are handy.

You speak somewhat as if you bought more than one. Personally if I found one in the box like that, I think I would keep it. It's not rare but it is history, and it ain't no slouch even for a non DJ type!
 
I would keep it.

I've seen new in a box units going for $1,000 or more from retailers that still have some. The 1210 MKII is the same as the 1200 MKii but is black rather than silver.

I would rather have a new or slightly used 1200/1210 than any of the under $1,000 Music Hall or Pro-Ject units. There are also many mods (KAB) and upgrades that can take the 1200 to another level. The one I have has yet to be modified, but it sounds outstanding with a Grado Black and 8MZ stylus. Not quite as good as the far more expensive VPI HW 19 rig I used to own, but it is closer to that level than I thought it would be.
 
I thought these types of question were suppose to be in Dollars and Sense? When someone is asking what something is worth or should they sell it etc...................
 
keep it and don't look back. you'll find a ton of great cart recommendations for the 1200 series here.
 
Technics SL-1210 is the international model Black version. Keep it and take excellent care of it. They are very nice turntables even for audiophiles. Enjoy it. They hold value very well.

Which is why it was moved here. :)

On the audio aspects of it, the thread is more than welcome to open a new thread to discuss that in the TT forum. Or read any one of the 10,000 other threads about the 1200. :)

Nice find, btw. Been searching for one myself. Would be fun to open one up fresh, but for the most part, I'm just not willing to pay $1000+ for a turntable I wasn't willing to spend $400 on a few years ago.

From a dollars perspective, the market for new 1200's is very hot right now, so I would cash in if I were you.
 
I am loving the 1600 mkII in my listening space. Having the auto functions suits my needs for now. Based on the condition alone, it looks like you got a good deal. Welcome to AK!
 
It's been 22 years since I bought my 1200. Gave me goosebumps to watch the progression pics of you unpacking that TT. Sort of like when my wife sees a newborn and gives me that "I want a 3rd..." look.
 
Those technics sell for quite alot to Djs.....the turntables have been in production for well over -30+ years now.

I'd personally sell them if you don't plan on Dj'ing...they're good tables but those will sell for $700+ fast!

Hhaha maybe that's my issue. I got the single one for $700.

But I was in the same boat, I was finding a lot of very dirty, abused ones, for around $400-500. I figured the extra money was worth the 1 year warranty that still stuck, and the background history that I know everything about it with 0 abuse.

Technics 1200s are built like Soviet AK-47; Indestructible and Immortal.

That thing will outlive you considering how many clubs/Djs/drunk people the average technics unit has survived. Enjoy the table!:thmbsp: It's a keeper....

I wonder if anybody ever saw the 24k gold plated technics TT?
