New Advent utility speakers

honestabe316

Oh Chief! - Jane Hathaway
Hi,

I need some help. I recently blew the tweeters in my new large advent utility speakers. I went to the big site looking for a pair of replacement fried egg tweeters and was dismayed to see that there were plenty of the fried egg tweeters for the first or original large advents but none for my version. They look similar with the exception of the square magnet part of tweeter being twisted so if your looking down or at tweeter it looks like a six point star shape....the other difference on mine the -,+ connectors are on opposite sides whereas the original advent fried egg tweeter has them on same side about an inch apart... mine has the metal grill and is orange like the original....im hoping somebody knows exactly what im talking about and can fill me on why the new fried eggs do not seem to be in abundance like the original ones. Lastly, does anyone know of a source for the tweeters i need? Any help would be much appreciated....
Thanks,

SCOTT

If you want the original you may just have to be patient until some come up on that site. As to why you're not seeing as many of your type, is well, I guess, the obvious- they aren't as plentiful. Apparently not as many were sold out there in the world.

You can use them interchangeably. The cabinets make no difference. I used to work at a HiFi store in the early 70's and the reason for the redesigned tweeter was that people were driving them with more power than they were designed for and Advent was loosing their posterior on replacing them under warranty. They weren't designed to take the 100-200 watts RMS that a lot of people were feeding them at the time. I have a a stack of 8 Advents that I was running with my Phase Linear 400 but I DID NOT TURN IT UP MUCH BEYOND HALF VOLUME. The idiots in the day were trying to run that into a pair of Advents.

The reason you don't find New Advent tweeters for replacement is they are ferrofluid cooled and rarely fail. Either you drove the crap out of them or perhaps it is one of the crossover components that failed. You might try swapping them out to verify. For the past four years, I've used my double New Advents for a neighbor's outdoor Halloween party. They get driven wide open with a 400 watt Threshold amp for five hours straight using the teen's compressed music! I've shredded woofer surrounds with the pounding, but haven't lost a driver yet.

Hopefully, it's just part of the crossover. The tweeter from the Original will work, but they are more fragile. Remember the speaker was originally used with 20-50 watt receivers.

Are you sure you blew out the tweeter? Just today I had moved mine to the other side of the room and started to listen to Stanley Clarke when my right speaker lost its high end! Fearing the worst I removed the tweeter and put the cable from the mains straight into it for a fraction of a second to verify that it wasn't dead. It's not. What happened was the solder broke from the input plate. All I had to do was resolder the wire and I'm back in business. .
You may want to check your leads.

they are blown due to a voltage surge from my now dead proton amp....but thats another story....so im assuming ill gave to wait until I find a set come up which could be a long time.......maybe ill just buy the Alon Model 1 speakers I auditioned this week...cant go possibly months waiting for a good set of speakers..thanks everyone. .

Hey jedi...I saw stanley clarke here in n.h. last Saturday night....terrific show.....so are the original non ferrofluid tweeters able to be put in the Nla cabinet? Will the crossoverfor the ola be the same as the nla? Heres the thing, I was driving my nla's with a proton d for months...a major accident with the proton threw to much voltage into the nla's...killed the tweeters and im sure ill have to redo the crossovers. ..my new amp is an adcom gfa-5400 125 wpc....I know my nla'a with ferrofluid tweets would have handled the adcom...but will the original non-ferro tweets handle the adcom? Its in bedroom and I dont crank it past maybe 4/10 on volume..usually lower...thoughts?
