This is mostly a vanity post I guess, but after years of lusting after a Hitach DA-1000 (vertical load first gen CD player) I finally added one - a Denon DCD-2000 rebadged version - to my collection today. I have to say this thing is every bit as sexy as it looked in pictures. And, to my pleasant surprise, it works great and sounds excellent.

I had doubts about the sound after reading some online who were critical of the proprietary Hitachi DAC IC's, but I cannot detect anything I dislike about it so far. And the coolness factor is off the charts. I have several other capable (newer) players already, but this one is special for its history and killer 80's aesthetics.

I can already see I'm developing a new obsession for vintage CD players, and really want to track down the Dual or Lo-D rebadge of the DA-1000 since they have silver front panels, a Mitsubishi/Diatone DP-101, a Sanyo DAD-M15, and a Philips CD-303 eventually. I'd love one of the Kyocera models (the 710 or 910 particularly) but those seem to have a very high laser block failure rate, so I probably won't pursue one. A picture of it in action on my test bench is attached. Needs some dust cleaned out of the door but is otherwise very clean.

Having played around with this now a few days, I have a question that hopefully a fellow DA-1000/clone owner can answer. The volume control on this unit is non-functional - it is set at 6 as seen in the picture in the OP - but the buttons have no effect. I suspect a problem in the motor drive circuit (volume is adjusted by a motorized pot within the unit controlled by the up/down buttons via a microcontroller) or the motor itself.

I'll be troubleshooting that soon, but had a question in the meantime. Does anyone know what the red LED at the right end of the volume scale indicator (10 green LEDS) labled 'DS' is for? It is on, but I've no idea what it means. I thought maybe it indicated a volume lock function, but there is no intuitive way to turn it off, and I'm lacking an owners manual - which, incidentally, doesn't appear to be online anywhere - so hoping someone here knows and will post.
