"NEW" Canton CT-1000

I was at an estate sale last weekend, walked by these floor speakers and didn't think to look at them. I came back around and googled them "Canton CT-1000". My jaw just dropped as to what people said about them, so i quickly bought them. they were tagged for $200, but being sunday, got them for $100 a pair. Based on my research, the originals were 1200, but these are the ones that went for $2500 in the mid to late 80s, with the tweeter and midrange right next to each other. Mahogany wood cabinet.

I will need to refinish one of the cabintes, because it was set down upsidedown and is scratched up because of it.

I don't have a 4 ohm receiver, but my Pioneer SX-3700 claims it can handle it. so i hooked them up. NO SOUND FROM THE WOOFER. So i took the woofer out and found that the wire had been cut on both. Seems strange. connected the wires back up and voila, awesome speakers. Now i'm not sure whether to keep them and sell my Polk Monitor 7s or sell them and keep the Polks.

On a side note. Anyone have any ideas as to why someone would cut the woofer wires? seems rather odd, the speakers were screwed back in as if they did it on purpose. Doesn't seem like the woofer was replaced, and it looks like an authentic Canton, with the name stamped on the speaker frame.

Great find!! Those speakers are WOW. Is that the model with the dipole midrange - tube exited to the back?

I have a pair of those great woofers but with locked coils. I gently disassembled (spider intact) them and am trying to find a coil to fit... nearly impossible. The gap on these is extremely precise. They were given to me by a friend who owns a record store where that waterlogged pair of CT1000s sit with some crap unoriginal woofers in them. If I can find coils or fix the original woofers, I will buy the speakers and build them new cabinets.

If not, I will have access to a pair of extra mids and tweets should you need them.
 
I had a set of those a while back. They are very nice. On mine the midrange did have the tube going to the back, and the mid and tweeter were side by side.
 
Congrats on scoring those! I am fairly sure those would mop the floor with your Monitor 7's.
 
yes, this is the one with the dipole midrange. sorry, i'm new to the home audio space, what are the benefits or drawbacks to that design? yeah, the monitors really don't compare.

The cabinets looks similar to my CT-90's piano gloss mahogany. The only difference from mine is they are towers with the divers aligned vertically. Great sounding speakers.

How do you like yours?
 
You are going to flat out love those - the more you listen the better they get. Wonderfully detailed speakers; spend the better part of an hour listening to a set when they were new and could not find the cash to buy them. Enjoy!
 
I have a pair of Canton Ergo 8 from that era. Mine is more of a tower with a tweeter in the middle of two 8"s. I love mine. They are very natural sounding speakers and oh so sweet and open in the high frequencies. Congratulations on your find.
 
Congrats on the Canton's. Not a very popular speaker in the States, but you will find they will simply out perform many of your popular brands that many normally go for. Canton is one of those vertical integrated companies that build excellent speakers which affords they can offer a better price than most in some of their speaker lines. Canton did go through a phase with a slightly hot tweeter, but those problems seem to be cleared up. The Canton sound has a large dispersion of sound especially in the mid band. The new ceramic tweeter is warm with great extension and the bass is full.

I listened to the new Canton Vento 820.2 about 3 days ago. That speaker is so musical and very well balanced across the spectrum of sound it will knock your socks off. As I've stated, the tweeter is warm...meaning no harshness or smearing whatsoever! Its very well focused, and does not introduce any pollution to distort what is suppose to be heard. The speaker had an unbelievable sound stage and was truly holographic. IF you are one of the lucky ones that have a dealer near, go in a take a listen to the Vento line....you will come away amazed.
