New CD player? New DVD player? Fix Oppo?

Hello Akers!

I have a used Oppo DV-981HD that is in need of service.....or replacement? A few years ago this player went bad and Oppo no longer was servicing players and went a different direction as a business. Hoping they would regroup and start servicing old players was my dream so I tucked the player aside and bought a Onkyo C-7030 for occasional cd playing. I also upgraded my DAC to a Schiit Bifrost for digital sources which is awesome. I do have some store bought DVDs and a bunch of burned "intellectual property" discs of various artists which I haven't been able to play since shelving the Oppo. My gut wants to seek out a service person and have it "fixed" but my head says just buy something different, better, serviceable etc. If I am to purchase a replacement, is there something recognized as like Oppo in that it is better than entry level. I see players for very short money (under $50) and am dubious of quality. Of course I have a budget of under say $300 for a new/used unit. What should I be looking at?

old school system by the way. DAC is aux source on my Marantz 2325 feeding various AR speakers, my favorite being the 5s.

and the response from them was they no longer service the DV-981HD. Are there any service resources otherwise? Is this even worth chasing or should I find an equivalent universal player? Is there an equivalent replacement?

It sort of depends what's wrong with it. "Went bad" says only that it's not working. It could be anything from a simple problem you could fix yourself to something that a tech can't or won't fix.
 
If Oppo repair service is till available, by all means getting it fixed would be the first choice. Unless you want a new Hi Rez player that also has a DAC decoder built in or that can play Data CD and DVD discs. Having a player that can play data discs is a nice feature if you use a computer to burn discs. DVD discs hold so much more than CD audio discs.
 
Oppo no longer services this model. The unit powers up but will not open/close the drawer. I do have the remote (fresh batteries) and it will not open with it either.

Does anyone know of a qualified tech for this kind of unit? I am in southern New Hampshire but happy to transport/ship wherever to have it fixed.

A couple things, I'd pull the cover off and see if there is something obvious, like a rubber belt getting old and slipping off its roller. first I'd search..Ok, this may not be it but it could be Bingo!
