New Cell Phone Scam

Friend of mine just called and told me about this one. He and his wife were just in a local mall when he got a call on his cell phone (AT&T). It displayed HIS number as the caller. He answered, and the person on the other end identified themselves as an AT&T rep that was investigating unauthorized use of his account, and needed the last 4 digits of his social to verify his identity. He hung up, then dialed 611, got a REAL AT&T rep and asked what was going on.

They said this was a new scam, once the scammers got the info they'd buy new phones, etc., and charge them to the account. They weren't sure how they got the person's numbers to display as being the caller, and as of right now they couldn't do anything about it.

I have heard of the spammer scammers being able to use other person's numbers to run their game (spoofing?) but I've not heard that they could use the same number as the one they were calling.
That's just creepy.

Good move hanging up. I never give social even if only the last 4 digits, the first 5 can be deciphered if one knows how and if they know how to display your own caller ID they probably figured out how to do social numbers.

This has gotten popular. Here’s what the scammers do once they get your information:

Call customer care and add their name to your account. Go to a store and finance expensive phones and accessories to the account. Sell those on CL or what not for money. I don’t work for AT&T but I’ve seen this at my Tmobile store as well. Both sides of the equation. Scammers with fake IDs as well as customers who ha e had this happen to their accounts.

If somebody calls you and says “we are so and so give us your personal information” it’s pretty much always a scam.
