OK like so many with Windows as my go to operating system. More due to being a user since the beginning it seems. Old dog new tricks .....

So bought a HP a few days ago. A laptop to complement my outdated W10 desk top that is unable to run W11. To get a new Desk Top, well then new speakers monitor soundcard ..... so went Laptop. Keeping the old Desk Top for music files.

All I can say is !F**K U MS for the OneDrive Cloud BFKNS! Took me a good while to find and stop this BS...

Still have not figured how to get it to play with others on my home network. Teases me by showing them.....

O well gotta have something to do.

I have two desktops, one older than the other, Intel i7 boards, both getting old. Top of the line when bought, assembled. They weren't supposed to be able to run W11 either but they do and with no problems. A tech can load it onto most older computers if they know and you desire. A push for OneDrive Cloud, sync, all that, mostly Edge when I use it, but no doubt nothing like a new store bought computer.

The desktop only has 4g ram and the processor was to old. Could not upgrade. Even if was told would be extremely vulnerable online.
It was already giving me issues of being super slow. Was thinking of a SS drive but still would be 4g ram.

New computers can come with a steep learning curve. It' will smooth out.

Installed windows 11 on a old laptop that they said couldn't run it. There was a work around to get it to install. It took hours to install. Did it run it yes. Barely and incredibly slowly. It was strpped down to the bare minimum. Really it was unusable and a waste of time..

Thanks for the telling. Now I won't even want to try with my old Win 10 PCs. They will be my secure systems.

I don't know anything about One Cloud, but it sounds as though you have stopped it from running; check the processes in Task Manager to be sure.

No need to rely on Windows to shuttle music files and streams around your network. Minimserver on a PC and BubbleUPnP on an Android device are almost-free apps get it done.

To turn off OneDrive in Windows 11, click the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar, go to Settings, select the Account tab, and click "Unlink this PC." You can also uninstall OneDrive by going to Settings > Apps > Apps & features, finding Microsoft OneDrive, and selecting Uninstall.

I got that done yesterday. Once I found out what the OneDrive icon looked like on the task bar.
It is the placing it on the computer as default that rubes me the wrong way.

To talk to other machines on your network, try Settings/Network & internet/Advanced Network Settings/Advanced sharing settings

Turn these on

Done that and they all show up just will not allow me in.
Tried public / private even removed password.
Taking notes when doing the three machines, it gets to be irritating quickly. I did the last W11 computer a year or so ago. Kept notes on how it was done then. Those two are still connected up it is the new W11 machine that is playing hard ball.

I've struggled mightily with this, for my aging mother who used to be able to easily save her Word files to her local drive. For many years mother had it figured out and was doing well for someone born in 1937. And then came that cloud crap and cloud Word (MS Office).
Her pc got old and needed replacing and you think I could get the old version of Word installed\licensed? Nope, nope and nope.
My mother basically gave up because the new UI would always default to the cloud and then she could never find her poetry.
Unfortunately, she's at a point where she can't understand new stuff.

Are they all in the same workgroup?

I can relate. I recently bought a gaming laptop, a MSI Vector 16 HX AI. It has a Nvidia 5070TI graphics card.

However, I'm not running Windows on this laptop. I installed Linux.

Since I'm not going to use Windows, I decided to get two 2TB NVMe drives and pull the original 500GB drive out. I never even booted the Windows drive. Intel provides RST (Rapid Storage Technology) that was causing problems with Debian recognizing the replacement drives. I ended up disabling it in the BIOS.

Something else that causes problems on gaming laptops when using Linux is there is an integrated graphics card, and then there's the Nvidia card with a technology apparently developed by Nvidia called Optimus to switch between the two depending on the need. I've yet to find a good way to set it up (or even one that works well) for Linux. I'll dig back into that soon and figure it out.

Then there's the RAM. Decided to upgrade. Just tearing this laptop down is a chore. The RAM is a type that was recently released, and from what I saw not many companies were producing it. Tried some recommended on an MSI forum which did not work. There are a few different types available, the higher performance being single row as opposed to double row. I ended up buying double row as I'm not gaming on this laptop. It's being used for photo editing and maybe a flight simulator in VR eventually.

Something that you do get with gaming laptops is the ability to upgrade RAM. I have a few business class Samsung laptops that have the RAM soldered onboard so there's no option to upgrade. However, gaming laptops push you toward the bleeding edge and are definitely more challenging than more conventional systems.

I have Windows 11. I set Word to save to an external SSD hard drive. Can't she disable the Cloud thing?

BTW... I back up all my data to SSD drives. Not Clouds. Small portable external SSDs are so convenient.

FWIW, I`ve found the use of a very powerful 3rd party uninstaller to be more trustworthy and more fully complete & thorough (registry scan), than using Window`s OS` inhouse program/app uninstaller !

It disable`s the app (a brief command line box appears) before uninstalling if the app is configured to be running in the background, whether user knows or not !

I really like the free revo brand one that was recommended to me by a well seasoned computer tech. sometime back.

It also provides the selection ability in its interface to track down examine and uninstall all user chosen Windows bloatware applications that aren`t available to be uninstalled via Win10/11s incomplete deceiving inhouse uninstaller.

All my 5 brand new replacement HP brand Win 11 Pro laptops are completely free of any useless to me, any MS accounts (MS now owns & controls your computer, if you create one !), OneDrive, Cloud, etc. bloatware privacy leaking apps from the first un-internet connected bootup & its initial OS setup starting just under a yr. ago with the first initial Win11 OS laptop evaluation test purchase !

At no time, since the first purchase and use of the Win 11 laptop almost a yr. ago has MS reinstalled any initially removed software/apps, or undone any of my aggressive/strict privacy selections that I have made after the OS monthly patches, fixes updates, as I go through all my settings and check every one, post the update.

Same goes with my aggressive/strict EDGE browser`s privacy settings, MS leaves them alone, as initially set by me after the EDGE browser wishes to update itself.

I`m guessing when MS monthly probes my machine`s configuration, that they figure I`m a dyed in the wool, privacy advocate, and apparently, at least in my case, respects my anally based choice of machine`s OS` setup`s strictly local account configuration ?!

Good luck, folks.

Well to update some....

New problem today.

Printer issue. No scanner and still trying to figure out if my $$$ new printer will work with this HP W11 yet works with my year old HP W11....

Plus doing a restore on the W10 because something I did earlier caused me to not be able get on AK PC.... could get on my mail FB not ebay CL ...

So on to restore. Found out the new computer has no restore so yet another issue.
Found out they set it with zero space for restore points, so nowhere to put it......
Geezzzz.

Seeing the names is good. I'll bet it's your permissions and security / C drive sharing. See below.

Is the new laptop set to Private or Public - it should match the other computers to be seen.

Then check your firewall that File & Print Sharing is allowed on Private or Public, whatever you're on.

Do you have the HP's Username and password in the other computers? At least have one common one like Administrator.

Is the new laptop's hard drive (C) shared?

Have you set the C drive's permissions and security to allow the common user on all devices you want to see each other?

Check if your HP's IP address scheme matches up with the rest of your network. From a command prompt type in ipconfig /all make sure the IP, subnet, gateway and DNS follow the same pattern. There's a space between ipconfig and all when typing.

It might look something like this:
192.168.1.118 (where the other computers will have a different number in the 4'th octet, but the first three placeholders should be the same. 192.168.1. xxx)
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
192.168.1.1

You don't have to have static IP's set but the scheme needs to match up. If your new HP is running through a secondary switch or extender or device of some sort before it reaches the common router, the HP's subnet or gateway might pickup slightly different numbers. 192.168.3.1 won't automatically see the other computers unless you specifically tell your router to allow it.

Also, you might look in Services and turn both Function Discovery services, SSDP discovery and UpNP to on and restart automatically.
