New DIY project

thought I would share a photo of my recent build. I'm still waiting for the rest of the guts so I can put them together but the cabinets are done.

my brother gave me a old pair of home jobbies and I figured I could do something with them. a new baffle some new holes, putty, and paint. reattach the aluminum and hey they look pretty good.

the tweeter is a Phillips RT8P and the woofer is a Peerless 830869.

Nice!

What are you planning for a crossover? That Peerless woofer seems to be good up to ~2kHz at 60°, with only a bit of weirdness in the cut-band. The 30° plot is most exemplary and the on-axis is good too, with only a small peak before the sharp and smooth roll-off. Do you think it will meet the Philips ribbon well enough, since it can probably not play too low and likely has very broad dispersion?

It's been a while since you finished your previous large speaker project, still like these after all that time? I'm currently working on my "fewest compromises" speaker project, check it out...

Good luck on this one and keep us posted!

Looking good Shawn. What are the dimensions of the cabs? Are the entire sides aluminum clad?

well you can find the schematics here in this thread

my dad gave my brother a whole bunch of old audio stuff and my brother gave it to me and asked if I could make him something. the sides and top are covered in aluminum and the internal volume is about 45 liters. really I just reworked an old cabinet that my dad had made, needed a new front and paint job.

My big DIY speaker project sits in my living room still as I completed them over a year ago. I use them about 14 hours a day and they sound even better then ever. I haven't made any changes to them, don't really feel the need to.

I do have a pair of ATC SM150s mids and Aurum Cantus AST30130 air foil tweeters that might get worked into something later on.

well my new drivers and parts came today.

I did a mockup of what it's going to look like and I must admit they do look kinda classy.

should have them together by next monday

Finished!!!

well after a lot of wheeling dealing to get parts and a few fixes here and there, I've finished my brothers speakers.

on just a cursory listen they sound pretty awesome. listened to Bruce Cockburns "Charity of Night" and wow. great bass, crystal clear highs. those Phillips ribbon tweeters really are so accurate but not too aggressive. I was able to use the crossover design Solen created for me without any alterations. they are getting really good at it and their database dominates anything a home builder could possibly put together.

I'll burn them in all week and then deliver them to my bro. hope he's happy cause these took some work

Shawn

Nice! You must have a great brother, I'm positive he does.

Wow thanks for the compliment.

something I forgot to add is that my dad originally made the cabinets out of HDF not MDF, so combined with the thick aluminum bolted to the surface these things are heavy.

I mean really heavy, I'm pretty sure each cabinet weighs at least 80 pounds if not more.

well they sound great anyways even if I've gotten a hernia moving them.

Nice work, as always, Shawn.
I'd like to get my hands on some ribbons and see what transpires.

these aren't exactly ribbons, they're called isodynamic tweeters. there is no transformer to match impedance. the best I can tell is that they operate much like BG speaker drivers. a conductive (resistive) trace is put onto a type of mylar and stretched over a gap on top of a magnet. the impedance of the conductive strip is such that it zeroes in close to 8 ohms. they are easy to develop crossovers for because the impedance is really flat.

these really do sound awesome and I'm very happy with the project.

Sounds just like a tiny Magnepan panel to me.
