New FM tuner boards for Sansui 5000 series

I just recently acquired a Sansui 5500 receiver and much to my dismay the FM tuning started to go bad. The signal level and tuning meters indicate that it’s getting a strong FM signal, it’s just that there is no FM sound. At first I thought that the problem was the FM mute button, but I just cleaned it and switching it on and off doesn’t make any difference. My vintage audio repair guy says that the FM tuning board is bad. He told me that there is a fellow on this forum who is manufacturing new replacement FM tuner boards for the 5000 series. If this is true, can you give me contact info for him? My audio repair guy is capable of installing the new board. More importantly, I need to know if these 5000 series FM boards will work in my 5500 (since it’s a quad receiver).

I've seen nothng here or elsewhere online regarding a new tuner board, and find the prospect of one ever being made downright unlikely for lack of demand. There are new manufacture driver boards (F-6013) for the output stage available for the 5000, A and X models. I've used these myself in repairing a 5000A and X a while back.

I note your thread title says 5000, yet in thread refer to owning a 5500. There is a model 5500 receiver, and also a QRX-5500 (these two are unique to each other and have nothing in common) and both of which are completely different models again from the 5000/A/X, sharing nothing in parts content.

In any case, the tuner board (I'm guessing the IF board is what's being referred to here) should be repairable at component level unless something unobtainable like a tunable inductor coil is bad, but will require a full proper alignment once the repairs have been done. If the tech evaluatng the unit is unable or unwilling to atttempt a repair and alignment, find a different tech who will take on the job. Tuner repair is advanced level work to get right, so not all techs are up to that aspect of vintage restorarion jobs.

Why not just fix the one in the amp? I have never experienced a situation where a tuner board needs to be replaced.
Proper diagnoses will find the faulty component/s, replace, align, and happy days......
 
Those IF stages used UA703 integrated circuits in the FM IF strip. They are a known common failure. Failure of one can cause several different symptoms, from weak FM to no FM at all (depending on which one(s) failed. You can easily check the gain of each stage with a signal generator (a tuned strong station can be used as the generator in a pinch) and oscilloscope. Just look at the IF wave form from stage to stage and find the one not passing signal or causing attenuation of the signal.

BTW, a poor man's FM signal generator (genius idea courtesy of the folks on this board): look up "car radio fm stereo modulator". They're literally like $25 and while they will be focused on one specific frequency, making them of limited utility in doing a full alignment, they will nevertheless give you a pretty reliable and clean signal to use for FM debug!
