New guy with no experience.

Hello everyone. Thanks for having me. New guy here with little to no experience in electronics, however, I am interested in it. I'm retired USAF and when I was on my overseas tour 1979-1983, I purchase a few Pioneer Silver Face components. I came here to look and read and understand about these components. I'm more mechanically inclined, anything electric freaks me out, so I tend NOT to mess with that. After more than 30 years of shops saying 'NO', I can't fix your equipment, I finally found three tech shops that will take them for service and repair work, when it rains it pours. I'm open to any suggestions that any of you have on anything Pioneer and techs. It's a shame I can't find a reputable shop where I live to just take them there, so shipping has to be done and that's scary. Thanks folks. I posted a pic of my two troublesome children.

I have a question for the Pioneer guys that mess with the digital timers. Most of my equipment has been sparingly used the past few decades. Life gets in the way sometimes. I have a DT-500 that seems to want to run fast. It's a switchable model between 50 and 60 hz. I moved the switch back and forth to see if there was anything there that might make that happen, and that didn't change anything. I was thinking DeoxIT D5 may work, I just haven't gotten any yet to see if that would do it. Anything else I can look at? Near as I can tell, after I reset the time, it runs as it should for about an hour give or take, and then it wants to run fast. I'm guess here but probably runs fast by a few minutes or more. Not a lot, but I haven't sat and watched how much time it increases for an hour of run time. But, it does run fast until I reset it again. Anything I can do myself or is this a job for a tech? Thanks for looking. Gary.

Gary, you'll get more response if you pose this question in the appropriate thread(s).
Good luck.

Welcome to AK Gary! Lots of Silver Face Pioneer owners here! I'm one of them as a matter of fact. And, thank you for your service;)

First off, welcome to AK!

Regarding shipping, I tell people that are shipping stuff to me for restoration, I would rather blow out pieces of styrofoam than deal with broken or bent switch and pot shafts. Expanding on this, buy a sheet of 4'x8'x1" styrofoam wall insulation, and use this to line your shipping box. For the front panel, cut a piece 1" larger than the panel, and use a steak knife to cut out holes for all the knobs. You might find it easy to gently push the styrofoam onto the front panel, so that the knobs leave an imprint in the styrofoam. The volume knob is going to be the obvious one first, and then move outwards from there.

Been thinking about it all morning. I was thinking about using really dense foam but if you suggest Styrofoam I'm open to that, too.
