Definitely check the thrifts, Craigslist, Facebook marketplace. For small speakers with a nice lower end I've been pretty fond of Klipsch and JBL in the past. My personal taste runs to older speakers but they might be too laid back for the heavy metal end of your tastes. Size will be an issue, I'd definitely say think about whether your palcement can change at all so you can accommodate something a little bigger. If you can find them at a decent price the old Polk Monitor series are really nice.
For my money changing and trying out speakers is the most fun part of this hobby. Good luck!
