New improved Chines 845 tube!

tubino

A guy with too many tubes
New improved Chinese 845 tube!

And a pair won't cost you the price of an amp. It's supposed to be based on the Amperex 845, still a graphite tube. (Supposedly a steel-plate version is in the works...) They look very pretty, with a copper base.

They can be ordered from SuperTNT for $150/matched pair plus shipping (from China, not real cheap).

You can read more, including a review, on an Audio Asylum Thread

I'm planning to order a pair for use in a pair of deHavilland amps. If anyone else in the Toledo-Ann Arbor-Detroit area is interested, we might save on shipping with a joint order. Let me know by Thursday (Aug. 19) if you're interested. Of course the joint order could work for ANY SuperTNT tubes, not just 845's.

BUMP - Last chance to get in on the order, which I plan to place this afternoon (Fri Aug. 20). It appears to cost ~$48 shipping from China just for a pair, so you can save the price of a couple dinners if you get in now.

I was reading about these over at AA a while back. In fact the vendor e mailed me when they came in. An improved tube no doubt, but for me not enough improvement for the cost. The 845 tube was originally built and designed to be a metal plate tube. It operates most correctly like this. Let us know what you think of these new ones but I'm gonna save my money for the metal plates when they hit. Call me cheap LOL :D

I can't argue with that, especially if you don't need to replace your current tubes now. Personally I thought $150/pair a reasonable price for such a durable tube, and I'm very curious + optimistic after hearing Kara Chaffee's enthusiasm for the 845B. Kara is the down-to-earth engineer of the deHavilland amps, and she seems a good judge of performance vs. hype. (Just look at her choice of tubes -- 6AH4, 6AU5, 5AW4, and 85 -- and you see she's evaluating without much regard for fashion!)

But I'm really looking forward to their planned rollout of a metal-plate version, and I hope the price and performance justify it!

In any case, I'll post my 845B findings here when the goodies arrive.
