Its been just about time to rebuild the cross-overs in my Kappa 7's for a while now. No big reason other than they are 20+ years old though.

I have been contemplating getting a pair of K 8 cross-overs and starting the rebuild with them. Advantages include bi-amped Kappa 7's. I also could keep the rear Emit in the circuit and add one physically to the K7's. Obviously the high pass on the woofers and low pass on the Polydome get reworked to eliminate the Polygraph on the K8 crossover.

I think there might be an improvement to the 7s by being able to bi-amp. Any thoughts here?

I would agree, having the capability to bi-amp is a big performance plus. I've often thought of doing this to my RS-IIIb's.
 
You would have the crossover circuitry for the woofer in the K8 that increases woofer output, but causes the difficult impedance drops. If you have the amplification to drive them, then the circuit works well enough on the K8s for those frequencies below 80Hz. However there is no telling what it would do to the output at frequencies up to 800 or 900 Hz that the Kappa 7's woofer must reproduce. The balance might be really thrown off. Off course you could probably modify the K8 crossover with the parts from the K7 crossover in order to restore the proper balance if it is an issue.
 
In 2006 my brothers and I purchased replacement crossovers for Kappa7, Kappa 8 and Kappa 9 speakers from dssoundlabs.com with excellent results. No more problems with amps shutting down due to excessively low impedances etc. No need for ludicrously expensive super amps either. My brother drives his Kappa 9s with a Sony TA-DA9000ES and they sound superb. I don't know if the crossovers are still available but I highly recommend them over the factory units. You can always reinstall the factory unit if you are not happy. The replacement Kappa 8 and Kappa 9 crossovers still allow biamping as per factory original. I have not installed them in my Kappa 7s as yet as I have no trouble driving them with an Onkyo 875 receiver.
 
Passive crossover

There is a pair of Kappa 8 crossovers for sale on the bay ( Not Mine ) But perhaps it would be easier to buy these to rework to fit your 7 drivers. Then You would not be out a pair of original crossovers you could keep the originals if not happy with the results. Just a thought...trying to help!!:thmbsp:
 
Thanks Augy, thats when the thought to start this project began. After seeing those on Ebay. Still debating though. :scratch2:
