New Large Advent Loud Speakers Score

A few days ago I nabbed another set of speakers that seem to be of the sought after sort, New Large Advent Loud Speakers. They need new foams which I ordered tonight. I read a lot about these being an inexpensive, capable hifi speaker that was made to rival much more expensive brands when they came out. Does anyone have any experience with these, and what are your thoughts on them?

Also one of the tweeters has a gouge in it and I'm not sure what I should put on it, if anything, to mend it. Any ideas?
Someone pulled the woofer out of the same speaker with the tweeter and apparently they lost the correct screws
 
Tons of info here on the original Advents. A little searching will do you good.

Also, post a pic of the gouge; I'm not seeing it in your above pictures.
 
Highly varying opinions on NLAs, and Advents in general but they work as intended: rival more expensive speakers at 'moderate' volumes with 'moderate' power in 'typical' rooms. The woofer is the big achievement, I think Henry Kloss went deep into his bag of tricks to get the bass response this driver has, though at its price point it has its compromises.
Those tweeters are brittle, there is a relatively recent thread on patching them, something I need to do on one of mine.
Despite the claim of rivaling other speakers while using 'moderate' power for 'moderate' volumes these speakers like power, 'moderate' being an imprecise term. Like 100 w/c power preferably for a decent sized room. Less can be okay, but that much depends on the size of the room and desired volume. Every step in power improved the performance on mine.
Unless I have mine against the wall I prefer them with Pete B's BaffleStepCompensation (BSC) unit.
Search suggestion: I often find a Google search does a better job of finding useful threads here on AK. Google has a lot more money to put into its search engine, and quite happily does so as it drives further revenue for them.
 
I think one of the overall compromises on the Advents was the tweeter. Back in the day tweeters that went low enough to mate with the Advent woofers were, at best, rare. The tweeter listed by @THD+N is impressive in its low end extension and fs though the crossover may need to be tweaked. There are other options for the NLA. Some love the Advent tweeter but considering how many of these get the Econowave treatment it is obvious others disagree.
If you're interested Classic Speaker pages has a dedicated Advent section, though CSP doesn't get as much traffic as AK.

Also, despite what is listed on the back of the speaker, i.e. 8 ohm, these are not 8 ohm speakers. In my experience running them on amplification not rated down to at least 6 ohms will eventually burn out the amplifier. YMMV.
 
With all the variables that come with speakers,amps,listening preferences I think they are a good speaker.I will say that I've had four pair come through here and I felt they were not for me.
 
I'd be surprised if you don't love them. I've been through a variety of speakers but when I landed a pair of the original Advents I haven't looked back. Nice and warm with great bottom end. I'm sure they would love more power per earlier comments, but I've never given them more than 50 watts and they fill my living room with tons of clear sound without ever really getting past 11 o'clock on the dial.

I wouldn't worry about that scuff on the tweeter. Doesn't even look perforated through. It's only a dust cap.

I have read about the Econowave. A great adaptation. I actually think the original Advent "ring radiator" tweeter sounds pretty good for what it is. I abhor the term "fried egg" tweeter, but that's just me.

The Peerless tweeter looks very interesting and is a ring radiator too, so I thought it would be fun to see how the technolgy has progressed in all the years by incorporating it into the Original Advent and taking some measurements.

On the other hand, I also have Klipsch Heritage speakers and can appreciate high sensitivity speakers as well... depends on what mood I am in.
 
They are very pleasant sounding, IMO better than the OLA's. I like the dome tweeter on the later model Advents better, though, cymbals and percussion seem more pronounced.
Overall an easy speaker to like and listen to all day.

Yeah I was thinking maybe it got pushed in in that corner too far. Someone definitely tweaked with that speaker, there other one is much better

Wow, I don't really see 6 ohm recievers ever. I definitely don't want to burn mine out. I will be sticking with the original tweeters I'm sure. I like to keep things as original as possible, specs and everything. I've never listened to olas or nlas in my life so I'm very excited to get it up and running for a test listen.
Not long ago I scored some other advent speakers. Newer ones. One of them was short, the other was tall. Both had thick, solid wood panels on both top and bottom. I can't remember the model numbers at all. The short ones tweeters were blown and I didn't have time for them so I gave to a friend. But the other only needed refoaming. They sounded pretty good, but I'm the end I sold them, as I have a lot of equipment and I try to remain as minimal as possible

That's awesome. My plan is to use them as my music speakers. I have a sort of tower cinema speakers at the moment that I use for both movies and music(definitive bp8s), but I had a set of Klipsch KG4 in my hands for just a moment pass through here and listening to music on them was a dream. I realized I wanted that forward facing sound again for music

Not uncommon with AVRs or lower end stereo units.

Would really like to get your impressions and measurements when you get around to it.
 
Got my NLAs in '78, and not letting 'em go. Whilst not currently in rotation, there's something about their ability to do so much so well that is endearing. Have gifted NLAs twice to folks dipping their toes into vintage stereo, and both are now up to their necks with the Advents swimming right along.
 
So I just finished refurbishing the New Large Advents and they have really surprised me. They have clear highs - tight, DEEP lows, and great separation. As per plan, granted they sounded good, and they do, these are my new dedicated music speakers. I will be testing them more in the days to come IMG_20221118_035644513.jpg
