New Large Advents WOW.................

I believe the bullnose moulding material is of a different wood species than the cabinet proper: Was it challenging to get the two woods to match, color-wise?

Also, the cabs appear quite glossy - what did you use to finish them?

I think the bullnose is solid walnut. The cabs are definitely veneer. May be hard to match only because of the crosscut grain on the bullnose. I am looking at one of mine now (Short story: I bought ONE off a craigslister who said that he rescued it from someone who TOSSED OUT the other one due to surround rot. The one I got from him is visibly PERFECT. I presume the other one was, as well. :sigh:). I have more of these than I want to admit even here.

Thanks everyone for your kind words! This was a fun and rewarding project. The bullnose was a lighter wood than the veneer so I had to stain it several times to get it to match. I finished with a gloss poly. Next project will be recapping. Thanks for the help everyone!

The bullnose molding on that case is Yellow Birch, a favorite for imitating Walnut with sufficient stain. I guess the bean counters nixed the real Walnut molding used on the original.

I have to agree with kaf888, the Advents are very good for what they are. But I would leave out the WOW factor. I have 2 pair of the Original Large in walnut and 1 pair of the New Large in walnut. All have been re foamed and re capped. The 2 pair Of Original Large are in storage and the pair of New Large get occasional play when I want to hear something different or when I want to run dual pairs. One thing I will say however is that it's hard to find a better looking speaker (walnut versions) for the price. You certainly demonstrated that in you master refinishing of your Advents. Congratulations on a superb job.
Just 2 cents from an old man whose hearing ain't what it used to be.

Yeah, mine were really pretty original ones (pre refoam)...

If you look real close in the lower left there are some 501's in the pic, how embarrassing :D

I might have missed it somewhere in the thread, but was was used to strip the black paint off of those speakers? :scratch2:

When I had to strip some black paint from the tops and bottoms of the solid oak pieces on my Polk SDA SRS II's, I used Strypeeze (sp?) which worked like a champ.

OK, after reading these comments, and being a certifiable Advent freak, I would make the following comments:

Large Advents may not be the best speakers of all time, but I've never really heard anything I like (much) better. At todays prices (or when they were new for that matter) they are the best value in the world.

The bass kicks serious ass. Tight, accurate, and they go as low as many subwoofers. I'm listening to Quadrophenia as I write this, and John Etwistle's bass is just stellar.

I have stacked Advents in the family/media room, and I think that it helps the frequency range. In other words the rolloff is extended by doubling up the drivers. I am told that in a stacked configuration, the freq. range is more like 30-18,000, which nicely covers the entire range of music, and the human ear.

Rock On. Booher, out.

Hey scuba, I'm very fond of my stacked Advents as well, but I wouldn't compare the bass of Advents to subwoofers. I have a Realistic 3 way that is rated down to 44hz and it absolutely puts out more bass than my stacked Advents. When I'm watching movies at my buddy's house (he has a subwoofer), the boom of crashes and explosions don't even compare on my stacked Advents.

That said, my Advents are still on my main rig (for both music & movies) and it's going to be a tough decision when I'm done refinishing my Optimus T-300's.

Back in the mid 70s the stacked advents were by far the most bang for the buck, especially for rockers. There was a membership discount store here in SoCal called Fedco that sold 100s, maybe 1000s of these stacked advent packages with big Marantz receivers. I was 95% ready to go that way when I fell-in with some higher-end enthusiasts with more expensive tastes and systems. One friend had the interesting Tannoy coaxial 2 ways and another had Braun Tri-Amps. Both of these guys had nice amps , turntables, but I remeber they both had Nakamichi tape decks. After weeks of auditioning systems with Bozz Skags' Silk Degrees, ELO's Eldorado and an 1812 Overature import with real period canons and bells, I settled on the cheapest set-up at one of the local OC audio salons - B&O M70's with a Yamaha CR600 Receiver and a BeoGram 1900 TT. Paid $2300 in 1976 dollars. A week later after the wife's complaining about wanting to sleep at night I went back and bought the Yamaha HP-1 headphones for $200. To put this in perspective my 2 year old Honda Civic was $3200 out the door with T&L. Everybody thought I was nuts. The TT only lasted 10 years because B&O discontinued the idler:no:, but the receiver made it 26 years. I still have the M70 speakers in my #2 system and the HP-1s are going strong as well.

I like the bass output on my EPI 201's (2 8" woofers per) better than the Advents and the top end better as well, IMHO. The Advents might have better mids as the EPI's are slightly sucked out. Then again they need recapped I'm sure. To each his own, there all good, listen to what catches your ear. :thmbsp:
