New Martin Logan Prodigies, Scripts, and Theater Owner

Lately I have become an extreme audio junkie. Like most of us I particularly look for those bargains. This gentleman's ad on CL says he has a set of Prodigies and also the Scripts and a Cinema. I knew the Prodigies were expensive when they came out but when I saw the new price tag was $10,995 it blew me away. So, we started negotiating on the phone and agreed on a really reasonable price for the setup of 5 speakers. When I got to his house I realized the center speaker wasn't a Cinema but a Theater "i" ( maybe the i means improved?). That was fine with me because the Theater is worth twice as much. After a quick demo (really sweet sounding demo) we took everything apart and loaded it up in my truck. The Prodigies weigh 135 pounds and the bass units are really heavy. My helper couldn't assist moving the bass until 8 last night so I haven't even set anything up yet.
I need to move my ADS 810s and 780s out and put the big Ps there. The Theater is 43" long and won't fit in the furniture so that's a PIA and the Scripts are wall mounts. I want to bi-amp the Ps with my Mac 6 channel but will need some RCA Y cables to split the pre-amp out into 2. This is what ML recommends. That Mac won't fit the existing entertainment center either so for right now I'll just see how the Ps do on my ballsy Pioneer HT.
Oh yes. I still have to rebuild my Maggies. I'll probably sell some of this gear soon.

I got the Prodigies hooked up and WOW! Listening to Adele 25 now and just powering them with my Pioneer and it ain't bad. That HT receiver has more balls than I thought. I still need to hook up the Scripts and Theater i.
 
Nice score! Congratulations. I hope you enjoy the complete system, as soon as everything is in place.

Good to also hear that the Pioneer isn't too out-classed by the Martin Logan's. It leads me to believe that Pioneer's SC digital receivers are as good as I've read.
 
I purchased this system from a really rich dude who had "upgraded" to a really nice home theater setup with Vandersteens. He actually had a real theater room with the projector, sloping floor and chairs. Maybe $100,000 in electronics in there or more. He was tired of the MLs sitting around and gave me a really good deal. I got all five speakers for less than the asking price on the Prodigies, quite a bit less and about 35% of the Audiogon Blue Book for the set. I never shelled out thousands for speakers before so it was a big day for me.
My Pioneer did cut out on me when I was really pushing it. The 4 ohm load probably is a bit much at high output. The receiver is bi-ampable but I need some more wires to do that. Eventually I want to bi-amp my Mac up but need more stuff to do that and I can't fit it in the entertainment shelf so something needs to be worked out. I may hook my Carver up in the meantime. That big center channel is a minor issue because it won't fit on the top shelf with the TV. It has a mounting bracket for the wall or I could buy a mount for the TV.
Yesterday I was watching Guardians of the Galaxy and the sound was fantastic. We were hearing things we hadn't heard before. I need to disconnect my sub and see how the MLs do on their own because I think their bass is better than my Velo. It better be at that price. LOL
 
You are missing out on a lot of the sound by hooking up just a receiver up to those speakers. You need big amp power going to those puppies to get the most out of them. Trust me on this.
 
They like GOBS of clean class A power. I heard them Regularly on 400 watt class A Krell mono blocks and they sing. Not to be a downer but running that pioneer is like puting cheap gas into a Ferrari .. Garbage in Garbage out !
 
Everything is hooked up now. Here's a pic. Excuse the mess but everything is in disarray. I just put the Scripts in there so you can see them. They are my rear surrounds now. The Theater is just sitting on the floor till tomorrow. I'm going to mount the TV to the wall and put the center channel there on the top shelf. I ordered some new speaker wires for bi-amping. I have the Mac 7106 (6 channel amp) which is not shown in the pic and will bi-amp the Prodigies to that. The Mac puts out 150 high current watts per channel into 4 ohms so that will be 300 watts per speaker. Will that be enough? The instructions says the Pioneer will bi-amp on it's own and I am assuming that I can configure it to have 2 separate pairs of pre-amp outs (bi pre-amp?) to the Mac otherwise I will have to get those RCA Y adapter cables. It does sound pretty good with just my little crappy Pioneer as long as I don't push it to hard. It sucks being me. LOL

Stereophile has a nice review, with measurements, on their site. The impedance does drop to 1 Ohm, but the review measured it at 25KHz. The nominal impedance was 3.55 Ohms. Still, Stereophile does recommend a amp capable of driving 2 Ohm loads.

Otherwise, the speakers look awesome. I didn't realize that the Prodigy's had a $10K retail price. And that's just one set of speakers. You have the Script's and Cinema too. Nice. That should sound epic. Plus, that Cinema makes my Martin Logan Fresco center seem puny!

Wow! That looks either like Martin Logan Heaven or Martin Logan Hell depending on how many or what kind of your favorite amps they have killed.
Unfortunately I've been there.
I have a pair of Sequel IIs that have brand new panels and new trannies and crossovers that I swear will not see service until I'm able to drive them with something more than worthy of them, like maybe a Krell.
I don't see a lottery win in my future anytime soon so they'll stayed stored away.
Seriously tho...that is some nice looking ML spread there but please heed what others have said about the amp killing abilities they are capable of.
