I'm new here but keen to learn.
I have inherited some Luxman Laboratory Reference Series components from my father in law.
I had taken an interest in vintage amps after reading this article and just being blown away by the beauty of these old designs.

Once I started to read into them more I realised there was also sound quality to be had. Mentioned it to my father in law and he dusted off this LRS gear that he bought new in the early 80s.
There is a:
- 5L15 Integrated amp
- 5F70 Tone control amp
- 5E24 Peak Level Indicator
They have been stored in a dry and relatively dust free environment. Upon opening the cases they appeared to be quite clean and no signs of damage. Gave it a blast with some compressed air and crossed fingers.
I tentatively plugged the 5L15, heard the relays click and after about 5 seconds the VU meters lit up. Turned it off, tried the other components, they all lit up so happy days.
Plugged the 5L15 back in again, powered up, then after about 2 mins of sitting there (nothing connected, no inputs or speakers) it made a load 'zzzap' with a 'crack' sound and then acrid smoke from the rear LH corner.
Turned it off immediately, unplugged etc. Thoroughly inspected for damage and no signs of anything burnt or any board damage. Visually checked all fuses, seemed fine - so plugged back in again and it powered on fine. No burning, no noises.
I am yet to plug any speakers or inputs in, let alone hook the components up to eachother.
My question is:
- where do I go from here? Should I try hook it up and see if it's producing sound? Or should I just take it straight to a tech?
My knowledge is weak at best and I don't trust it to leave it powered on and unattended given the smoking experience. But I'm also aware that parts for these things can be NLA.
