New member with newly acquired sansui 9090DB and G8000

I am a new member to this site and from reading posts here I found it is a tradition for a new member to introduce himself and show off his gears. So here I come.

Have had Marantz, Pioneer, Nikko, Mcintosh, Accuphase but never had a sansui until two weeks ago I acquired a sansui 9090DB. I liked it so much that I acquired a sansui g8000 one week later. Both were bought off CL and in very good condition. I listen to female artists such as Sarah Brightman, Bonnie Britt, Diana Krall, etc. So far the sanusi's handling of the high end impressed me the most (no sign of distortion). I need to spend more time with them to discover more their beauty.

Thats some nice gear you have! They are built like tanks! I want to get a sansui someday.
 
Wow you really hit the mother lode. Rare to get those let alone back to back.

Would really be a great contribution to review and compare their sound when you get a chance.

And yes, female vocals have a purity, clarity and smoothness which really can showcase your gear. And with Sarah and Diana some arrangements that can make a very vivid sound stage.
 
I have a 9090DB and had a G-8000. Which one do you prefer and why?

I know more people here favor the g8000. But I have to say soundwise I like the 9090DB better. I did a A/B testing last sunday after I picked up the g8000. I used a speaker selector which I got from circuitcity when they went out of business as the receiver selector. The other equipment and test materials I used:

Toshiba HD-XA1 HD DVD player to play CDs,
Yamaha YP-D8 turntable,
KEF 104.2 speakers,

CDs: Lean on me (Bill Withers), eden Sarah Brightman.
LPs: Nick of time (Bonnie Raitt), Thriller (Michael Jackson)

I think these materials have a good coverage in sound frequencies. I have no knowledge of audiophile terms or audiophile language but I will try to use my own words to describe how I felt about the receivers.

On lean on me, the g8000 showed better instruments separation. I can easily picked out the guitor when the drums were hit the hardest. However the 9090db mixed the instruments better behind Bill's vocal. With the 9090db I felt the band was a little closer to each other which I liked.

On Sarah, the high notes came out from both receiver effortlessly. It seemed to me the 9090db had more potential to go even higher before showing any distortion.

With Bonnie the 9090db had fuller sound. I paid attention to how a song ended on bother receivers. It took longer time for the 9090DB to go completely mute which seemed to me the 9090db was able to expose more sounds from the same materials.

With Michael Jackson the 9090DB had a little tighter and faster pounches. However the rap performed by Vincent Price can be heard more clearly on the g8000.

All the differences between the two were insignificant. Honestly I am not sure if I can tell them in a blind A/B test. All in all they are all great receivers.

In her plastic dress the Big G isn't as pretty as the 9090, however her knobs are a welcome feature.....:banana:

Plastic dress for sure, but what a pretty face. What was Sansui thinking wrapping the Big G's in vinyl anyway?:screwy:
 
There's nothing quite like a big G lit up at night time. :yes: They look particularly cool lit up along side a Christmas tree during the season. :thmbsp:
 
This is the start of one helluva good vintage receiver collection for the OP.
Consider sending the case to Merrylander or LBPete for some veneer...Pete did my G 8000 and it's a beauty.
But, if you were heading to a desert island, and could only take one, a 9090db or a G 8000, which one?
9090 for me, but not by much.

The G-8000 for me but not by much. I'd have kept mine and sold the 9090DB but my son liked the push button for power on the 9090DB better than the toggle switch on the big G. :headscrat

I have a Sansui 4000 and a G-6000. So I was interested in which direction I might go as an upgrade.

Some of the impressions you have of the 9090 v G-8000 match mine of the 4000 v G-6000. I think the 4000 is a little warmer and the G-6000 a little more neutral. Some of the contrasts you mention such as separation may be a matter of taste so I may lean to the G-8000 if I had a choice. Plus I like the looks, which may be as valid a reason given they are so close.

But as said, different speakers and rooms can make a lot of difference and I can go back and forth.
