New (Old) Infinity Speakers, But...

Watts goin' on.
Hoping this is the right forum for this topic, here goes my rookie at bat.

Have recently obtained a pair of Infinity Kappa 6 speakers, completely re-done and beautiful. I was told they are inefficient, due to their sealed construction, hence require some considerable horsepower behind them, “I wouldn’t try it with only 40 or 50 watts a side,” he said.

Never a soldier in the wattage wars, I have always enjoyed good listening from moderately powered amplification (i.e.: 40 wpc).

Of course, I want to give these speakers their due, but need information as to choosing effective amplification. Mr. Leesonic, clearly someone who knows, talks in these forums about the NAD 3020 handling 4 sets of speakers with 20 watts—does that mean that amp would handle these speakers? Is there some way of measuring the speakers’ efficiency in order to make a formulaic prediction of their need for power? How does one ascertain whether one amplifier’s 120 watts are only as muscular as another’s 80 watts? Or 40? Or 20?

I understand the concept of relative efficiency vs. power required, but since there will be more than enough subjective pros and cons to juggle when the sound turns on, how can I at least determine some objective information about the power requirement?

Or is quantification impossible and it’s simply: go big or go home? That’s fun, too!

The 3020 is rated at 20 watts/channel, that's probably not enough (although, to be fair, that's into 8 ohms, and these are 4 ohm speakers). While the spec sheets do say they need a minimum of 30 watts, they also say that the Kappa 9s need a minimum of 60 watts, and I don't think any Kappa 9 owners would consider 60 watts to be nearly enough (I run my Kappa 8s with about 300 watts/channel in a 12x20 room). A lot would depend on the size of the room and how loud you like to listen. What sort of equipment do you currently have that you can experiment with?
 
I have an '80s Pioneer 3700 receiver, which is in for an oil change and tune-up, and a newer Kenwood KR-V8540 receiver. The Pioneer is 45 watts a side, the Kenwood 120 per side, according to today's measurements. I listened to the speakers at an audio store with many amps set up side by side. Called back after and was told we had been listening to a 60 watt Pioneer and they sounded good enough to buy. The search for a vintage power source is on, which is how I found AK. I just don't know what to search for, other than something in the 80–125 wpc range. Understand the Holy Grail won't just jump up saying, "take me, take me." That longer chase will be the fun part. I imagine the result to be a basement full of audio treasures my wife will not wholeheartedly appreciate.
 
Since you have it in your posession, I'd start out with the Kenwood and see how it goes. I suspect that it will do the job; then, when you get the Pioneer back you can do a comparison and see which sounds better.

I see by the manual that it has an impedance switch for use with 4 ohm speakers. Generally it's not a good idea to use this as it decreases the power available to the speakers. However, if you find it running very hot, or the protection circuitry starts shutting it down, then you may find that you have to use it.

I'm determined to power the Kappas with something vintage, so pairing with the newer Kenwood seems like it would solve nothing. Your reference to the impedance switch, however, led me to the online version of the Kappa manual at the same site referenced by Xray...77, above. The manual clearly says lots of watts is good, even more is better. Among other things it mentioned the clipping that may occur with a lower powered amp could damage the speakers, a fact of which I was utterly unaware. So, you ultimately led me down the high-wattage garden path.

Guess I'll have to start a WTB thread in Barter Town to see what muscular amplification is available.
