New [Old] Sony STR-7055

OK. First post and thrilled to be here! :banana:

Picked up a 1973-1975 Sony STR-7055. For reference and inquiring minds, paid $150 (shipped. bought and sold on ebay).

Running it through my now vintage 1998 Infinity RS8's.

Still trying to find a cool turn table. Really seem to like the old Sony stuff and Pioneer [there is too much activity for Technics for me !]


-->So, how does one connect a powered sub? Set speakers to Normal. Use Y-connector to sub in?

Nice 7055! Sony made very competitive receivers in the 70s and the best part is that nice ones like yours can still be had at good prices compared to some of the other names. I have a STR 5800SD and really like it.

Good looking 7055. (I have one I've had since new.) Looks like you could use some dial lamps. AK member dgwojo can help you with some, or some automotive bulbs can do it. You'll probably also need to redo the green tint on the ends of the glass and fabricate replacements for the paper reflectors (which almost always will be burned.) I used mirrored card stock from a craft supply. Replacing the incandescents with LEDs will help prevent future burning.

But you asked about connecting a powered subwoofer. I don't use one and don't feel a need for one. A good pair of speakers connected to an STR-7055 will put out a lot of music. (IMHO, subwoofers are more of a gimmick to add "punch" to movie sound tracks.) My opinion aside, using a sub that will allow you to pass the signal (other than the lowest bass) through to your speakers is the easiest way I know of.

I am going to skip the sub connection as suggested. The unit sounds great with the Infinity RS8's anyway.

New Sylvania bulbs installed (DE3021's I think). Looks great.
 
If you want a sub I would use one with speaker level inputs... typically work well with small speakers and old 2 channel receivers. Like the Infinities, I have a pair of RS-5b with the EMIT tweeters and love them.

Agree on speaker level inputs. The Sony has 2/B outputs so those would work and allow you to either have the sub on or off (assuming you have a A+B option). I use full range speakers that I love, but sometimes you want that really low bass that not all full rangers provide.
 
You won't regret these Sony's are under kind of still under the radar but prices are climbing I use mine everyday over both my marantz 2250, and Pioneer sx1010

Those look like the critters. What was the condition of your paper reflectors? (I think they all burn, over time, with the heat of the bulbs.)

Also, did you happen to catch that the lamp holders are removable from behind the dial? (A single screw holds each in.)
I've seen posts saying the face must be removed to access the bulbs. Not so. Only necessary of you need to access the glass for cleaning or to re-paint the green tint on the ends.

I used green LEDs in mine: LEDs to avoid the heat problems (and burning paper reflectors) and green to see if I could get around painting the glass ends. They worked alright, but aren't a perfect color match (the original green has a bit more yellow to it) and since the LEDs are more focused, there are bright spots that wouldn't be with incandescents. (I'll probably eventually add something to the glass ends to diffuse the lights... possibly something with a bit of a yellow tone to it.)

The STEREO lamp is a "grain of wheat" lamp. I forget the specs, but dgwojo has the correct ones, and sent mine w/ everything I needed to install it (heat shrink, even a short length of solder, if I remember correctly.) That's it in my avatar... and you can also see the shade of green of the dial lamps.
 
The paper reflectors were burned! I also saw how to remove the revlectors with that tiny and fussy screw.

If you want to use a sub, put a y connector on the pre-outs and run a small amp or patch to a powered sub woofer. Great receiver, the next series xx800SD were non discrete but retained the discrete sound, unlike many STK powered units
 
Good morning, I just purchased a STR-7055. Just out of curiosity, can you use all the channels/ sets of speakers at the same time? A,B, and C? Or just A,C or A,B? I just want to make sure mine is working correct. When I switch it to A,C, should it be okay through A,B,C?

Congratulations on your purchase of a great receiver!

Only 2 speaker pairs can be selected at any time, either A+B or A+C (exactly as the selections are printed on the face.) Driving 3 pairs of speakers would risk damaging the amp.
