Yesterday I bought a new old stock Dual 701 at an estate sale along with some gently used JBL L56 speakers. This thing was new in the box from the mid 70s. I spent $160 for everything. Find of the century. Here are some photos:image.jpegimage.jpeg

I didn't pay the asking price...I bundled the JBLs with the turntable for $160 instead of paying $200. It was a bit of an out of body experience to open this 40 year old time capsule.

That is a 1st-generation version,as I recognize the anti-skate dial.Slight alterations to the circuit board and esthetics were carried out throughout its manufacture.
See that the platter is true. Many of them were not. This is why they changed the mold a few years into the run. I used to have a machine shop here in Brooklyn true them for me.
Remember to remove the [marked] packing screw from the back of the counterweight. Try a V15III on this rig, as it would be a great combination.
 
Seth: Box says it's a CS70, so it should sport the Dual variant of the Ortofon M20E, which is no slouch either - and I think at least over here there should still be a couple of sources with comparatively fair prices for NOS original needles (DN350), which according to what I'm aware from the Dual community over here typically don't show any negative signs of ageing (yet).

Over here in the states most 701's came with the Shure V-15 Type II cartridge out of the box. I'm running a Pickering XSV/3000 on mine and it works very well. I also have a Shure V-15 Type III for mine.
One thing to watch out for is dried out lubricants. After Dual turntables have sat for awhile (like this one has) the original factory lubricants can dry out and operation of the turntable may be sticky. If you find any parts hard to move it would be prudent to clean and relube the unit according to the Service Manual instructions. Enjoy that turntable, it's a nice one!
 
Do not be tempted to lube the motor or even the gear. But it must need a new clutch tip by now, as they turn to dust. If you cannot wiggle a new one into place without first removing any parts, then make no further attempt at this without first asking. The 701 control arm is upside-down from the standard Dual design.
