new or vintage speakers for C-11 and MC240

hi,

wondering what you guys might recommend for the "ultimate" speaker to match with my C-11 and Mc240 - i'm not looking to spend CRAZY money - but i really want the best speakers i can get for these Mac pieces....

currently i'm using a pair of JBL C60 Sovereigns with the SR8 system, but my room doesn't have the width - in addition, i have the original console for those sovereigns and i'm thinking of setting them up in a separate listening room..biamped with my c26 pre

what new and/or vintage speakers would you recommend as the best match for detailed audiophile listening for this pre/amp combo..

fyi - i listen to just about everything from jazz, sinatra, rock n roll etc... so they need to be able to do it all

thanks

A pair of Klipsch Cornwalls or K-Horns would be perfect for your system and music. Used Cornies can be had under $1K. Horns will be a lot more.

That depends on your ears, so of course I couldn't say.

Both K-Horns and Corns have been made for decades and are current models and are highly efficient and go well with tube gear. Horns will cost quite a bit more, require corner placement and are better suited for larger rooms.

hi,

50 different people here will give you 50 different answers of what THEY think is the ultimate speaker, as could I. But I have absolutely no idea what speaker YOU will think is the ultimate. I think you should go around to some hi-fi stores and listen to what's out there, then you decide.

This would mean looking at new speakers, which is fine. IMO very few old speakers match the better new ones and no old speakers surpass them. So you might as well confine yourself to new ones. Unless you happen across something old or used you really like of course.

It might be difficult for the OP to demo new speakers with gear comparable to that which he intends to use. My suggestion was intended more as a starting point which I should've stated.

thanks - there is no one even remotely close to me with Khorns or Cornwalls in stock - unless i find someone local to Detroit whose home I can check them out in. I definitely don't have a HUGE room now, but will be moving soon, so a larger listening room is coming..

i read somewhere about Paul Klipsch's idea of the Khorns in the corner as far away as possible with a mono center - and find it very cool that my C11 and C26 both have "center" channel outputs... i suspect I could find a MC40 mono block and run that on the center -

has anyone actually experienced this setup?

thanks

Try posting in the McIntosh forum. It's your best bet finding someone who's used the Mc gear you have in that configuration. Your proposal sounds very interesting. :thmbsp:

More often than not, vintage electronics go well with vintage speakers. I have a pair of Cornwall II's and the Cornwalls are the best sounding IMHO with regard to the Klipsch heritage line. They have the best bass IMO. Macs and Altecs have always been a good combo too.Or I should say Mac Tubes and Altecs ! :D

But again as has been noted, only you can decide what sounds best to you ! So if you have a pair of Model 19's or a pair of Cornwalls you can listen to at a friends or somewhere else bring your amp with you. Let your ears do the deciding for you.

You can find some of the vintage speakers at very reasonable prices if you look thoroughly (Craigslist & eBay).Without having to spend crazy money...

Good Luck with your search... :thmbsp:
