New project 2245

Just arrived. You can see some of Bob's packing job. The best packing for these heavy beasts I've seen. It's in the queue so it will be a few weeks before I can get to it. It appears to be mostly untouched. But I see pink slime on one transistor and I dont think the caseless relay is OEM? Nothing appears to be burned or out of place. So I'll probably do a power-up test just to see where I am with it before I park it. I already got my kit from Randy for the caps, LEDs etc. I also got a few cheap rectifier kits off ebay to try converting the AC of the OEM lights to DC. At 3 dollars a kit which includes the PWB, it's hard to beat the price.

I just finished a 2230 so I'm looking forward to this one. They seem to be close cousins :) Although I cant say I'm thrilled with how they flipped one of the channel amps so the pots are on the bottom of the unit vs on top :/

I don’t think you have to change the LED’s to DC if you get the most modern lights like you get from Randy. I just replace the incandescents with his LED’s and it works. I’m not very knowledgeable about LED technology, but it seems I read that the newer fuse bulbs have the technology built in to deal with the AC. If I’m wrong, someone will chime in, but I have replaced bulbs on many 22xx’s with these bulbs without modification, with no polarity issues, and with no flicker. Check with Randy about that.

Agree with the above, no AC to DC should be needed. Pretty much all LED fuse lamps can take AC, and I'm assuming you got bipin LED's for the source lights. You should be good. Also even if you did need to, you don't need rectifier kits, just a 1N4004 diode and a 100uF cap.

Good luck with the restore, just did one this weekend. Pretty straight-forward other than the stacked FM boards are the worst.

the LEDs work fine .. but flicker and at times I can see it enough to bug me with the 60 cycle rate. I don't like florescent lights for the same reason. I've always been sensitive to the flicker. The kit is just a cap, resistor, 4 zeners and a nice PWB. It makes a handy package. The newest gen of LEDs can be ordered with the Zener but these do not have it. I really just wanted the board :). the parts are a bonus. I got something like 10 kits for 6 bucks.

. Yeah.. the 2230 I just finished is the same layout. And yes, the stacked boards are a PIA. What I ended up doing was heat shrinking the first inch or so of the wires because the insulation burned so easily. That let me put nice clean solder joints on it without torching the wires :)
