I have to admit, I haven't quite figured out why there is both a 250 and a 250M, both with meters.
However, this afternoon, I'm just putting the 3300 preamp back together after it's rebuild and a friend comes by with a "gift" for me.
It's a 250 amp that was for sale earlier this year, in another town. My friend lives in that town, and he knows I like the old silver faced Marantz- and so bam! It's mine. I had even called about this exact unit when it came up on CL, but I was told that it was sold.
So, as I moved the 3300 to the "burn-in" bench, I used this 250 amp for power. So far, I'm glad to say both channels on the 250 work at lower volumes (can't turn up the power yet), no strange sounds, or distortion, that's good as this amp isn't very stable and can burn itself up occasionally.
So, it's dirty. One meter doesn't return to zero properly and the adjustment screw feels broken. And it has a silver top? Huh. Looks extra dirty now sitting next to nice-n-clean 3300. Oh, and it's missing it's feet!
I already have a nice 250, with both service bulletin upgrades done. Not sure what I'll do with the second one, might just clean it all up, replace those high ESR caps (the same blue ones as in the 3300) and do cheap mods. Probably won't replace those output transistors, those puppies are $$$ and you need 8 of 'em.
