New setup help!

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently began to upgrade my entire audio system and have run into an issue I’d like to bounce off some more experienced minds than my own.

I purchased a Sansui AU 6600 and Paradigm 9seMK3 speakers first and hooked up to my JVC JL-A20 turntable. Everything seemed to be working fine.

I‘d had my eye on a Rega Planar 2 turntable for a long while and finally pulled the trigger. When I got it set up it seems like I had to turn the volume up to nearly half to get decent sound. When I started playing with certain filters etc the speakers would begin to shake dramatically.

is this due to the moving magnet cartridge on the P2?

Do I need a phono pre amp even though the Sansui has a phono stage?

I am still learning about all the components and how everything works together.

Any direction will help.

What cartridge is on the P2.

Reads like you have acoustic feedback, speakers influencing the turntable and that getting amplified. A pic of the rig...gotta have the speakers away from the table so the sound doesn't bother the record playback.

Does using the low filter slow down the problem? Even though that low filter takes a bit of the bass as it should since it is a low filter and not a subsonic filter, it probably should be used when listening to records.

Are you sure the P2 has a moving magnet cartridge? If it's actually a moving coil the output would be very low like you describe. Otherwise the Sansui phono stage is all you need for moving magnet cartridge; if it's a moving coil you need another step up device, either a mc transformer or amp.

it’s a Rega Carbon cartridge

I’ll upload a few photos. I had my speaker right beside the TT. I’ll maneuver som things around and try get some space between them. I’ll also try the low filter.

Oh I feel for that group of components. There is a lot of sound quality left out of the presentation with the set up you have. I know it is required based on the room but if and when you have the opportunity to pull your rig out of the corner and set it up so it can breath, you will be massively rewarded with better sound quality.

I don't see the rest of the room or the listening position so I'll just address what I see. The speakers against the wall and stuff into the corner will bass load and produce more bass than if they were a foot off the back wall and away from the corner. The lower bass output will be more realistic and less muddy. That bass is making the Rega vibrate in place and causing some bad audio.

I know folks have to put gear in certain places or it can't be in the house. If you want help with positioning, postup some more pics of the room to work with and folks might be able to make some recommendations. If you are stuck with what you have, we'll just see if we can get that lightweight table to play nice with the speakers.

Put your turntable on top of the record cabinet and slip the whole works into the next room.
Get those speakers off the floor, even an inch. Can't tell from pic if they have spikes. If not, get 'em.
Your speakers should have come with cylindrical foam suppositories to insert in those ports. Use em. Or start experimenting with socks.
Are your speakers new, and part of your upgrade, or are they in line to be upgraded?

Everything in this setup is new to me and much better than what I had previously.

I will figure something out to get the speakers off the floor as no spikes or anything came with them. If I make a set of pegs for them will they need to have rubber bottoms to minimize vibration?

I can separate the amp from the turntable if I extend the RCA cables. Will I lose sound quality by adding a connection in that line to extend it? I’m considering trying to rearrange the room to get all my audio components away from the TV as I’ve noticed with the TV on and muted it creates a hum over the audio speakers

I did pull the speakers away from the TT and away from the corner and it seems like the speaker shaking wasn’t an issue. I played with all the settings without an issue. So I think I’ll try to rearrange and keep the TT separated from the other components.

Is it possible you plugged your TT into an AUX input and not the PHONO input ?

Wouldn't be the first newbie.......or the last to make such a mistake.
