New 'Solid State' Hard Drives

I've seen some information about some new 'solid state' hard drives that are being used in some new laptop computers that have no moving parts and are a lot less subject to damage. This seems a lot safer than depending on the current technology as a long term music/data storage solution. Is anyone else following this development?

Eventually all moving parts should be eliminated. The weak spot of a CD or hard disk is the rotating plattern. Music will soon be distributed on SD cards or somesuch (probably something completely new to make us all buy an entire new format) but will result in no skips, no gouges in the disc surface and all that. An entirely electronic HD would be helpful, as long as the refresh battery/capacitor does it's job.

Hardly a new idea, but finally getting affordable. Anything spinning at 5400, 7200 10000 or 15000 rpm's is ripe to self destuct

I'm replying from my Asus eee PC with a 4gb flash drive. Runs cooler and faster than anything else I've seen.

Yes 4gb is tiny, but I also have a 8gb SD card for storage. Since this is a second PC, I don't mind the small size.

Surprisingly, flash memory has a shorter life than a hard disk in terms of the number of times it can be rewritten. It's not a big deal for most storage applications, but virtual memory usage can wear it out very quickly. I wonder if they've managed to fix this problem?
