This weekend I picked up these amazing Ohm Model G2’s off of a really friendly guy who had just updated his speakers. I’ve been looking for a pair of Ohm’s for years now as the brand fascinated me and I’ve heard stellar reviews on nearly all of their speakers.
I’ve had the same pair of JBL P30’s for 6 years now and while they’re no slouch, there’s a lot I’m missing. I noticed during headphone sessions how much I was actually losing with these subpar speakers and found a pair of Ohm’s on marketplace. Unfortunately they were a 10 hour drive away. I managed to find that the owner had just moved from my city and would be back in a few weeks to grab things out of his storage unit, and that he could bring them then. Even better, he was interested in trading for some of my components I wasn’t using that I had been debating getting rid of in the first place.
This brings us to Friday. Finally, my long awaited Ohm’s would be in my hands in just 24 hours... then I got word that the seller found some cracks in the foam. These Model G’s are notorious for the foam degrading after about 20 years (now) and although it’s only a $45 fix at Ohm, the idea of having to wait a few more weeks to listen to my dream speakers was a tough pull to swallow. So yesterday I picked up the speakers, and perhaps unwisely, proceeded to listen to Thin Lizzy until I noticed foam pieces falling.
Although brief, the quick listening session got me acquainted with what I’m going to be experiencing in the near future; deep, full, and thick bass, clear clean mids, and a smooth, controlled high end. I really love the sound these speakers make. Now I’m just looking forward to when I can truly crank them.
