New speakers: JBL L166's

I love them! They sound so good compared to my other speakers. They're being driven with a Sansui 7070 receiver, and the only downfall is, the original tweeters were replaced with some Jensons, and another kind, both dome though. They still sound good, I got the originals too, im planning on sticking them back in.

They have the black grills, I saw some orange ones before, and they do look pretty cool. I'll have some pics up in a few minutes, I'll also post a thread about the sansui, just got that too, part of the deal.

I have the same Jensen tweeters in a pair of speakers that I cobbled together a few years ago and I listen to them at work every day of the week . They are nice tweeters . Love that 7070 too . Nice speakers .

Only one is a Jenson... I have no idea what the other one is... It's different, and so is the sound, but the adjustments have been made to adjust for the difference. When I get the original tweeters in, I'll put up some pics of those.

If you have originals, put them in and see which ones sound better.
I also have a pair that's waiting for foam repair/refoam.
I tested them briefly before and their bass hits you in the chest.

I went out to look at this guy's collection, and I walked in, saw the JBL's, and knew I had to have them.

He had more speakers, a whole collection, some 15" Jensons, some EPI's, which I also bought, a lot of nice receivers, and a ton more speakers.

When we tested them, the bass from the JBL's knocked me off my feet, it was so much better than anything else.

I'm also putting in the original tweeters right now

1 tweeter works, the other one.. not so much. It makes sound, but its really quiet, I turned brilliance to full, and it got a little better.

Does anyone know if this is repairable? Or is the tweeter a lost cause?

If the tweeter works better on one speaker than the other, the L pad is probably to blame, or a crossover cap. If it remains problematic on both speakers then it's probably the tweeter.

If it's an L pad, you can probably pop out the woofer and clean the L pad from behind, with some contact spray cleaner pointed into the vent slots; just turn it back and forth a lot.

It's definitely the tweeter. The guy who sold to me said so also. I used the same connections for both, one at a time, and one was definitely quieter than the other.

Do you know why this would be and if it's fixable? As the 066 tweeters seem to be very hard to come by... But I knew that going in, these parts would be hard to find.

I don't really know. I would take it apart and eyeball it; they come apart pretty easily. Maybe a tinsel lead is coming loose?

I just picked up some MCS speakers other day and one tweeter was way quieter than the other,I did an ohm test and the quiet one was 1 ohm,and the good one was 6 ohm.

I took it apart and yep the voice coil was damaged ,I was bummed!

Hey Jlord, I was the guy leaving while you were there. Grand Island, right. Anyway I tested the bad tweeter. It ohmed out at 1.4 ohms. The good one ohmed out at 4.4 ohms. I'm going back today or tomorrow to pick up the amp I bought that was driving the Jubals he had for sale. Hopefully he'll budge on his price for the JBL 4313B's. I kinda doubt it though. Good luck with the speakers.

Yup. I was kinda hoping they both worked, but still, the one that does work sounds pretty good. He said the price was firm, so I'm not too sure.

Tell him I say hi!

How did you take the tweeter apart?
Does the front silver plate come off?

I have't taken it apart, but I could. It looks as though it separates near the bottom plate, and has a few nails or something holding it together. I will open it sometime and see if its obviously damaged. I'd really love to get it working, instead of paying a minimum of $125 for a new pair.

In the meantime, those sound pretty good with the dome tweets. :music:

For sure. I put the working 066 in, replacing the Jenson one, and it was a HUGE difference, the highs were a ton brighter. I had to turn the brightness down, and turn it up on the other one to compensate. I have them running with some MCS 6 somethings, on the Sansui he sold me. Sounds pretty good together.
