I scored a nice 2230 and had it recapped and restored about a year ago. I'd love to find a great pair of speakers to match with it for family room listening. Looking through older threads there are a lot of vintage speakers that come highly recommended such as the dynaco A25's. I've been searching my local craigslist and facebook marketplace with no luck finding vintage speakers in decent condition that seem promising. Everything on the big auction site seems to be priced much higher than I would usually want to pay for vintage gear that I can't look over or test plus the high shipping costs for speakers added on.
I listen to a wide variety of music styles, but the speakers have to work well with jazz and classical. A great soundstage and natural sounding instruments is more important to me than booming bass. My current speakers are a pair of Bose 301 series iv that I bought back in high school. They have a nice wide sound stage, but struggle with clarity and just sound a little cloudy or veiled to my ears.
So I'm wondering if any of you have had success pairing an old Marantz (lower powered) with a new speaker. Any good recommendations in the under $600 price point?
I did see a pair of Polk Monitor 5jr's locally for sale. Would those be a good match?
