Hello Everybody!
Just wanted to give a heads up on my latest project with my newly acquired set of big 1978 Kenwood LS-408B loudspeakers.(my 9th pair of LS series USA made Kenwoods):) I stained the first cabinet this week and will be doing the next one this weekend, and then re-foaming the woofers and then they'll be ready for my museum, lol!

What kind of stain did you use?

Did you put a coat on it to make it look shiny or did you just use something like lemon oil?

I have a pair of LS408As that look a bit dull but it doesn't need to be restained. Just freshened up a bit.

I just cleaned them off really good with windex, yes windex, lol, then fine sanded them with 1000 grit sandpaper, then applied the oil based minwax dark walnut stain, let it sit for 3 days, then with a lint free wiping cloth, soaked it in enamel reducer and wiped off excess stain, VOILA! I did have to fill in a few areas with wood filler, scratches and such, but as you can see, they turned out quite nicely. Depending on personal taste, you can clearcoat them, but I recommend not to since these were not that way when new:)
 
Actually Terra, you can freshen them up without staining with "Liquid Gold" furniture oil. That has brought back to life many, many cabinets I have seen:) I have seen nearly chapped white cabinets get back their rich, dark luster with just a few coats of "Liquid Gold" good luck! You'll have to show me how they turned out if you try it.
 
I read that subject line ALL WRONG and thought to myself:

"OH NO ! someone put a plant or drink on his Kenwoods and they have a new stain !"

actually READING the thread, I see the 'new stain' - looks great Big Tuna :thmbsp:

I second the Liquid Gold usage . . . also another good finish refresher / cleaner is straight Lanolin handsoap . . .
 
Really great looking!!! Nice job...

I know many have used Liquid Gold and it does a nice job, but I can't recommend more than enough Howard's Restore-A-Finish, and the Feed-N-Wax... You can get the finish restorer in several colors to match the wood...

I've started using it on anything wood in my home, and WOW.. it really is fantastic..
 
Windex! Good ol' mineral spirits on a rag will do a much better job of de-gunking your cabs before and between sandings!
