New Technics sl-1210gr made in Malaysia.

Are the new sl-1200/1210gr's made in Malaysia as good as the sl-1200/1210gr's turntables made in Japan? Is it too early to tell?.... I am also considering the "Rega P6" the "Project X2" and the "Marantz tt-15s1. If you would not buy the new Malaysian turntable which one would you choose out of the others I have listed above? Thanks in advance for your opinions and thoughts.

I would not buy a turntable that is belt driven - no matter where it’s made. So I guess that answers your question.

There are far more complicated devices made in Malaysia than turntables. A turntable should be a whole lot easier to manufacture than an internal defibrillator or a diagnostic imaging device.

Anyone who rules out a Technics turntable b/c of where it’s made was considering it for the wrong reasons anyway.

Ok I hear you on the belt drives. How many Malaysian built sl-1210/1200gr turntables have you looked over and Is the quality the same those made in Japan?
 
I have owned a MIM built 1200 MK7 for about a year. No issues. I would not hesitate to buy a MIM GR, or any other Technics product if that is what I wanted. Just make sure to work with a good retailer that will make you happy no matter what, same as any other big gear purchase. In the U.S., that would be someplace like Sweetwater or Crutchfield. Can't help you if you live elsewhere...

I thought the GR's were only manufactured in Japan so I haven't heard of Malaysian Technics.

I owned a modern P3 and now have a 1200GR, they are slightly different animals in terms of sound. This is a generalisation and personal to me but compared to the Rega and even the Avid I still own the Technics is a more precise sounding turntable. There's something about the way a direct drive generates torque that imparts much cleaner leading edges and image specificity, my Acutus sounds a little more diffuse by comparison. Theres also upgrade potential in the GR as you could either have the standard arm (its not bad as is) rewired of replace it with an alternative arm. For me in many ways the Technics betters the much more expensive Avid, others like the softer and warmer sound of belt drives, at the end of the day you decide.
