New to AK, have some speaker woes and need advice

Ok, needed garage speakers as I spend a lot of time there and bought a yamaha receiver/amp from some CL guy who worked on speakers and loved JBL. A year later I have a cheapo set of JBL's, L100s, L40's, L88's (need help) and L150's (really need help) Learned about buying speakers in the dark. Don't know a bunch about speakers buy I'm technical and learn fast. Would like to build a set for the TV and a garage set.

Problems:

L88's (late novas)
these cabinets look like they were REALLY kicked around and are hide-in-the-corner but work. One has the woofer cone /cap torn but siliconed back together (and sounds well) and has some weird tweeter in it (I got the original tweeter but it was "bad"), the other speaker's tweeter cuts in and out, especially with the potentiometer dial (what do you call this?) and doesn't "kick" as much as the siliconed speaker.
-is it possible to recone, how do I test for bad tweeter, can I clean/decorrode the dial, something making the woofers sound different?

L150's (not A's, really mess)
There are two, the crap one and the less crap one. Both passives need surrounds done, both look like they were stored in high humidity-screw heads on mids and tweeters are rusted (all dust caps pushed in). Less crap one - decent cabinet, plays, not sure on testing performance of all components. Crap one- cabinet is really bad, glued here and everywhere, passive cone is warped, woofer is sharpied "blown" on it bus has been refoamed.

-I'll rebuild crap cabinet, do I have to use the same material or can I use MDF, front and rear look like I can reuse, but top, bottom, sides are shot. Can I wet down passive cone and reshape (just a mist and then weight and iterate until I get it down)? How can I tell what's wrong with the woofer, no visible damage, decent surround foam job, cone moves in and out but seem asymetric in movement in/out. Can I test all the mids/tweeters for correct performance (some kind of test to tell who needs help [other than me])?

I can get the woodworking done, can solder and figure out circuits, and have a decent multimeter. I have time, but not a huge budget. I can look up procedures and research, just looking for the right direction. Really want to pest and see where I stand with all the components, just need to know how.

L100's and L40's are great, cheapo's are going down the road when the L88's move into the garage. What do the knobs on the speakers control, the L40's have on knob, L100's have two. Any easy way to get the owners manuals (guess they would tell me the functionn of hte knobs)?

Welcome to AK!

Search for "JBL xxxx specs" and you will usually find the tech date sheet for your speakers. That is a good place to start...crossover schematics and part numbers and so on.

Tons of info here on restoration. JBL parts are usually expensive but available.

Much more to follow by others.

The knobs on your speakers (and on almost all speakers, if they have them, regardless of manufacturer) control the level of the midrange and tweeter. They typically don't have a huge range (and in fact on the L100s, the amount of change in dB is marked on the foilcal). When using them, start at the 0dB mark and gradually adjust if it appears that they need it. On my speakers I usually leave them flat.

The knobs are known failure points, they corrode as they age. A shot of Deoxit D5 inside the controls, and several wipes of the knob back and forth should clean them up.

Welcome to AK.
The L88's - woofer is a 123A-1 which there are recone kits available online, tweeter a LE20-1 which there is also a recone kit available to fix your non-working tweeter.

ivandezande, thanks - I have a spreadsheet with the components of each speaker, can I test the speakers/tweeters to see what is wrong, I've heard some methods to determine voicecoil but anything helps so I know what's wrong before I fix it. Thanks for the advice on the knobs, it seems they are a problem in one of the 88's. I was thinking dumping them in my ultrasonic with a citric acid surfactant, works well for corroded electronics but the spray probably works faster. When you say it controls the level of midrange/tweet do you mean the power supplied or the cutoff points?

Any ideas on MDF for the cabinet?

If one woofer sounds weird I'm guessing you're right on the money and it'll need some help. For the tweeter that may be broken, either clean or bypass the level control and hook it up - I'd say connect it right to an amp but it needs protection from low freq.

The controls affect the level supplied. Deoxit is the way to go there, or just replace them.

I think MDF will be great, the cabinet dimensions staying the same is really the only matter there.
