New to AudioKarma and new to Marantz 2220b

Hi all. Just joined the site and picked up a used Marantz 2220b (my first vintage receiver)! I'm a musician (guitar and bass) and always been a lover of music, but never really had anything to do with vinyl.

Recently picked up a little all in one setup used at local shop and instantly fell in love with all that vinyl offers.

Step forward two weeks and I picked up a Rega RP1 turntable and a used Pioneer (1990s) receiver and speakers. On top of that i've been buying vinyl like crazy and relaxing every night to the beautiful sounds of vinyl.

Like I said, picked up a used Marantz 2220b that's in pretty good condition but some of the lights are out, it's missing the "remote speaker" connection plate on the back, missing the volume knob, and the volume is low on the right speaker when it is in stereo mode. Any suggestions, help? I really want to get this beautiful piece of equipment up and going in my setup and get rid of this 90s receiver crap!

Also any recommendations on a great set of speakers to go with my Rega RP1 and Marantz 2220b.

Thanks guys!

Kevin

Personally, I'd take it to a good tech, but get a quote on it. With what you have described, it might cost more to fix than its true value. The old Marantz units hold their value, but a smaller unit like the 2220b might not be worth the money that it might take to rehabilitate it. Check the auction site for the various parts that you are missing, and i'd start with the standard deoxit cleaning of switches and pots on the unit. Always the first thing that I do with any old equipment. If you are lucky, the low volume issue might clear up with a cleaning. If you aren't quite so lucky it could be a transistor, capacitor or other issue. Not a horrible thing, it just might cost you some $$$ to fix. If you plan on keeping it, putting in a few hundred to fix it might ok - but that's probably close to its value. Good luck and welcome to the site!

I just did a bit of work on a 2220B. It's a nice sounding receiver.

Your problem is in the preamp section. Clean all the controls. If that doesn't work, it could be a bad transistor or cap.

Welcome to AK, and good luck.

Welcome to AK and Marantz! That is a nice sounding one. Do a search on DeOxit spray for cleaning the pots and switches, the problem may be nothing more than some oxidation.
