New to forum, wondering if I'm doing this right?

I have a Pioneer SX-737 receiver, a Pioneer PL-15D-II Turntable, and I was about to procure two Technic SB-CR33 2 way speakers which are 8ohm and 140 Watts...I'm wondering 1.) what kind of wire I should be using 2.)Is that ok, like, is there going to be a problem 3.) I wanted to add a couple other speakers later (some hpm 100s maybe?)...so I'd have two on A and two on B...would THAT be a problem (for the amp) (I mainly want to use/take advantage of all the functions,you might say that's my goal) later I wanted to hook up a couple tape decks too, so I can use the recording functions, don't know how to do that either, heh. Basically I don't want to mess the amp up and I'm working out my plans for this system, any guidance would be most appreciated...I've never posted on any type of forum like this so please be gentle.

Hello YoungPioneer, welcome to AK and to the hobby of High Fidelity.

You could check Parts-Express.com or Monoprice.com for speaker wire. If you are in a hurry you could also go to the local Big Box store but you will probably pay more for a lower quality product. You can get a 100 foot roll of 14 or 16 gauge wire for around $30. You can buy smaller rolls but the larger rolls are a better value. 14 -16 gauge should be sufficient at the power levels of your gear unless you plan on making very long runs of cable.

Be careful when connecting the wires to your gear. Be sure the equipment is powered OFF. If you are not going to use some kind of terminal(spade / bananna etc) be sure that no stray strands can short across the connections.

You can safely use two pairs if 8 ohm speakers at the same time. Once again, be sure the equipment is OFF before making any connections.

Register(free) at HiFiEngine.com and download the manual for your SX-737. The manual has instructions and illustrations for connecting speakers, turntables and tape decks to your receiver.

Excellent advice there and I have little to add. Basically you can't mess up your receiver unless you 1) short out speaker wires or 2) crank it with 2 pairs of speakers (4 ohm load) or 3) overuse the bass tone control or loudness, or (heaven forbid) both at once. Actually if you get HPM-100s you won't need a second pair running at the same time. That's like adding a pop gun to a Howitzer. :p
 
First of all, welcome to AK.

Secondly, the SX-737 is a heck of a good receiver, from (arguably) Pioneer’s ‘golden era’ of receivers. I had the SX-525 in high school, and currently have a restored SX-550. It’s quality gear, that with some TLC and attention when needed, will last you many satisfying years.

Lastly, not sure if you know this since you’re new here, but there’s an entire manufacturer sub-forum here, including one for Pioneer:

What's up with the poll you created? from what I can tell it has nothing to do with your initial post and for that matter your audio equipment and audio equipment in general.

Call me a heretic but I suggest running a line from your PC to the auxiliary input so you can enjoy internet music streaming or using your PC as a music server. PC meaning just about anything...desktop, laptop, tablet, phone, smart device. 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo to RCA cable (<$10) in almost all cases.

I do digital stuff too, but I've been a record collector since...well, I guess forever, they used to give us those toy record players then you graduated up to the real ones but that only play 45s, then I had a little suitcase player with disco cowboys singing karaoke into Bob Barker style microphones...i guess In the early eighties but it was a seventies hand me down...since then I've had all kinds of different misfit equipment that's come and gone but as I'm starting to get my life on track I decided to put together the kind of system I've wanted since I was a kid. I'm not really trying to figure out "how to listen to music" really, I use everything...from a little yellow Sony sports Walkman to my gaming rig with Sanwa arcade controls for MAME and Nintendo pads etc, Xbox 360 remote for heavily modded Skyrim/Fallout new vegas on the couch...but my obsession with the consumer electronics of my childhood is connected to my feeling that allot of the music I listen to was recorded with certain mediums in mind...I'm not analogue ONLY, I think Greg Ginn solo albums sound best when you record them from C.D. to DCC for instance, I think the only way to properly hear Sam Hain "November-Coming-Fire" is on cassette tape, especially on say, a Sharp GF777, but any decent boom box will do. I can't listen to my dad's old garage rock 45s and Beatles and Stones records any other way than on Vinyl, though. I mean, "Have Mercy" on "Out of Our Heads" has such a thick heavy bass on the record but on YouTube...I dunno, it's not interesting sounding to me. I suppose any car can get you to point A from point B but if you enjoy the ride and all you're doing is cruisin'? If I have the money I'll take a Lincoln Continental over a brand new Toyota any day I mean, we HAVE high definition, but black and white celluloid and 60fps film is still as viable for expression as a cranked Fender twin reverb blackface amp is for a guitar tone...in a way it doesn't matter if there is a modern substitute...I want to feel it, I want to know. But yeah, I'm listening to Sun Records artist Gene Simmons (the Rock-a-billy one) "Drinkin' Wine" on YouTube right now, so I guess you'd say I'm more of a gourmand than a gourmet. Pleased to make your acquaintance, Sir.

Thanks Toxie, I was just having fun. But technically, as soon as I get this set up I AM going to play "Conan the barbarian" through the AUX and maybe "Legs Diamond" ...just the hits, mind you. That is if I can get one of these decoders for "SQ, RM, Matrix 4-channel program sources" figured out. Love Troma films man, nice to meet you.

Just showin' a little class, being a character, breaking the proverbial ice. First post. Now my thread is called "am I doing this right" so i appreciate your inpute as im both learning about my equipment ( for instance, I want to darken the veneer on this turn table, saw a thread for that, incredible!) And this forum, and forums in general.I don't have allot of experience with these other than maybe Skyrim Nexus, but that's a little different. I understand you are expected to stay germane to the topic at hand, so I figured I'd post in the general section first, get a feel for the waters, you understand. Pleased to meet you Dswankey!
