New to Marantz

My first serious stereo was a Sanaui 6060 and I still have it and it works great. Over the past couple of years, I've started collecting some of the higher end vintage Sansui equipment, cleaning them up, recapping, replacing fusible resistors and basic, simple restorative stuff. When the shop gets full, I sell off a few pieces to make room for more.

I visited some of the other forums here at AK, including this one, and started reading about some of the other equipment. I wondered how Marantz or Pioneer compared to Sansui. Well, I just purchased my first Marantz, a 2030 from the original owner. He got it in 1972 and used it until 1984 when he put it in storage. He had the original Marantz box and the owner's manual too.

It has a broken power switch so I have to turn it on by plugging it in. Once on, it sounds pretty darn good for a 30 watt 37 year-old stereo. I like the way it looks( except for the crappy metal cabinet-I will make my own, thank you) and the way it sounds. It needs a good Deoxit bath and a general interior cleaning before I start replacing old caps.

On the whole, I'm well satisfied with the Marantz 2030 so far. (Except for the crappy case or did I already mention the crappy case?) Was there a wood shortage in 1972? I don't remember.

I plan on taking some before pictures and posting here later and I know I will have questions as I begin the restoration process.

Hi Doc -

I think you mean 2230, right? That's a dang good receiver (so is the Sansui 6060 and all of the Sui's in that series). The wooden case was an option for the 22xx series, and they can be found on Greed Bay all the time - I'm waiting for one for my 2270 as we speak. The more common case is the WC-22 which is a one piece case. They also offered a 3 piece case, but I can't remeber the number on that one.Recapping is a very good idea, and that power switch is a pretty common issue. They're not hard to find or install, or you could just use a switched power strip. By the way, 30 watts is a very conservative rating as you probably know by now. 2230 also makes a great tuner/preamp since the pre and power sections are seperable. Enjoy!:thmbsp:

AJ, yes it is a 2230 and not a 2030. The older I get the more difficult is is to get good messages from my brain to my extremities. My wife has hundreds of stories.

Thanks also for the info on the cabinets. I didn't know about the option thing. I have a table saw that goes real fast and I like to make cabinets for the really nice stereos I buy but I will take a good look at what is available and maybe do a veneer project instead.

I found a replacement power switch at that other place and it is already on its way to me. Now if I can just find J008 to make some power adjustments. I haven't found it yet.

Hi -

I think the Marantz database might help - I've never gone there but I think they have manuals & schematics. Good luck!

Good receiver and pretty decent to work on.

They made wood cases for them that slide over the metal one was an "extra" That said the 2230 = a great little amp!
