New to me c38 and MR7082 tuner

Well the c38 doesn’t actually arrive until tomorrow, but the mr7082 came today and wow what a difference. I was previously using a tuner section of pioneer sx990 receiver with preamp outs as my tuner. It sounded good but wasn’t the best with pulling in stations. This 7082 sounds just as good if not better, and wow it pulls the stations in so much better. One of those experiences when your upgrade turns out to be just as good as you hoped. I don’t even listen to the radio much but might start listening more now that I get all these stations. Absolutely love the feature that displays the little red dot when you’ve got the station tuned in as well as it is going to get.

cant wait to get the c38 tomorrow and have my early 90s dream system completed with my existing mc7300. Hoping the c38 turns out to be just as impressive. I will be thrilled to finally have remote functionality!

The C38 is quieter than many of the newer preamps, a fine performer. I loved it with the MC7300, an excellent match.

I haven’t owned a McIntosh tuner in decades so I can’t comment on the MR7082, pretty confident it is excellent as well though.

Fedex says C38 arrives tomorrow. Can't wait to give it a go.

I haven't owned many tuners so I'm not in a position to really judge I guess, but this thing is currently clearly pulling in college radio stations from Boston which I have never been able to be close to getting before. Listening to WERS for the first time in years and it is every bit as good as I remember. Absolutely blows away the pioneer I was using before.

Nice. Time to buy a pair of balanced cables.

Strong tuners are good, tuners with excellent discrimination even better. McIntosh has made a lot of very good tuners.

Sounds like it's going to be a very nice set up.
Enjoy that tuner and welcome back to FM radio.
I always have enjoyed FM radio but I live close enough I get Chicago stations so I have always had a good selection of programming to listen to.

The MR7082 did not come with balanced outputs.

The MR7082 was remote controlled by Serial connections. The C38 uses Parallel connections for the remote control of other units. So, you won't be able to control the stations or tuning on the MR7082 with your remote without a McIntosh MSI1 Multiple Unit Serial Interface. And, those are as scarce as hounds teeth!

However, I just happen to have a mint MSI1 that I would be happy to donate to you. PM me

So the c38 has landed and I like it so far. Not sure I’d say I’m blown away, but it is at least on par with what I had before. Haven’t had a chance to listen other than at low volume yet so need some time to fully assess. The huge improvement with the c38 is the remote. I love not having to get up to change the volume or the tuning. The tuner is definitely the star though. It sounds amazing and is a huge upgrade. Thanks to Larry for his offer above. We pmed. The c38 actually does control the tuner with a 15 pin cable between them so I didn’t have to take him up on his generous offer.

Downside on the tuner is that despite the eBay seller saying all functions were tested and working it does not hold the preset memory after being powered off which is kind of a big problem. This ann issue many people have when the nicd batteries fail. After various tests with new nicd batteries the problem seems to be a corroded battery case with damaged contact points. I contacted a great tech Ive used before to fix it but he is encouraging me to install a replacement myself and is coaching me through it. I removed the old case tonight (the rivets holding it in were annoying to remove) and should have a replacement kit and soldering iron here by Wednesday. Wish me luck I’m gonna need it.

any thoughts on how to handle this with the eBay seller? I’m planning to ask him to reimburse me the costs of the replacement materials should I ask for anything else? I’m annoyed it is not working as promised but Im looking at it as a chance for a learning experience.

eBay is all about the buyer. You can ask the seller for some reprieve and if he refuses open a claim with eBay.

Before doing so, you should understand what you outlined above is quite well known and documented of the 7082 - so unless you had this specific conversation with him through eBay's system, you may just consider yourself lucky that the unit arrived to you undamaged.

I'm not gonna open a claim. However he posted a video of the preset function working and advertised it worked (while neglecting to mention it doesn't work anymore once it powers down). It was a pretty misleading ad and I am annoyed by it. I recognize it's probably an error not made on purpose, but I paid top dollar for the unit precisely because of the representations made. Not going to leave negative feedback or anything but I do feel pretty strongly there should be a partial refund.

Thanks to the help of a very kind tech who has helped me fix equipment in the past I was able to do the work to replace the battery unit by myself. Total cost of materials as 47.08 which the seller reimbursed me for. Very happy to have this tuner up and running at full capacity now. Its a huge upgrade and sounds so good.

Nicely done and glad to hear that it all worked out. I've got an MR7083 which I freakin' love. I like it so much, I may buy a 2nd one for a different zone. About the only thing I don't like about this era of tuners is the schmutz that forms between the glass and plexiglass in front of the digital display. It's a real PITA to get that piece of plexi off of the rear of the glass without damaging it or the painted surface on the glass to clean it out. Once cleaned though, man do they look nice. McIntosh had a real penchant for their mechanical design for decades and the LED display they chose for these units really looks the part.

Enjoy it.
