New to me..Charlie Haden

I caught the end of this last night on Letterman and had to immediately download it. I love it. From what I've been reading he's been quite the Jazz bassist over the years. If it's new to you and you listen to the sound bites they don't do the CD justice.

Now I'm off to download some of his jazz. "Nocturne" and "Land of the Sun" I think. Very relaxing jazz.

Highly recommended...good to me anyway, see what you think.

I saw that same performance and was impressed also. I did some research on the Haden's recently and have been intrigued...I just have not pulled the trigger yet on buying an album.

haden's been in action since the 60s. he worked the heavy strings on some wild ornette coleman stuff-- the 'science fiction' album comes to mind

Charlie Haden is great - have a bunch of his albums, and have seen him live a couple of times.

I like his playing on John McLaughlin's My Goals Beyond. Thanks for the reminder...gonna play that one tonight.

Charlie Hayden & Pat Meteny " Missouri Sky"

Check out Missouri Sky with Pat Metheny & Charlie Hayden. It was one of my most played cd's till my Niece came out to the pond patio early one Sunday morning with her coffee and it was playing softly. She listened for awile while waking up and said no other piece of Music had moved her so much. She is 25 and I'm 55 so I had to give it to her as a gift when she left.I'm still looking for it again used. Triode Altec Concert Kenny

You can also check out Mr. Haden's work with pianist Geri Allen and the drummer Paul Motion on the albums: "In the Year of the Dragon", and "Segments."
He has to be considered in the top five of jazz bassists working today, probably top three but I don't want to insult any of the great players out there.
I think it's funny that his daughter married the comedian Jack Black, imagine having that lunatic for a son-in-law? :D

Sounded pretty good... thanks for the link, I'll check his stuff out a little more when I get home! :thmbsp:

Charlie Haden started out with Ornette Coleman on Atlantic. One record "This is Our Music" (1959or 60) is challanging and pleasing. Heck of a bassist. Few people really get Ornette Coleman and he does.

Wow, that was confusing. Clicking on those Amazon sound samples I heard some sort of Jerry Douglas bluegrass tune instead of Charlie Haden. I was half right anyway.

He did a beautiful CD with Hank Jones about 10 years ago on which they
played duo versions of hymns. Great stuff. He actually started out as a
child singer of this type of material with his family's singing group.

dbrookes and kenny are right on the money. Charlie Haden's playing, especially with P.M. is sensitive and melodic. Sounds simple, until you try to reproduce that tone and feel - I know, I've tried often enough.

I have this CD. It's great. I love jazz interpretations of spirituals.
Haden has a nice, fat, gut-stringed bass sound. Highly recommended.
