New to me Technics SB-6000 and the restoring process.

Hi guys.

So while I get some parts for my DM2s I'm restoring I bough some SB-6000 in ok condition, so then I hooked them up to my 1000A and they just sound terrible :(.

One of the tweeters is gone, looks like the voice coil is burn since one of the turns the cable is burnt black and doesn't have continuity and on that same speaker the woofer is sounds muddy but after taking it out and tapping it sound about right to me.

So now the questions :

Why the tweeter burnt out ? the fuse was gone too but I don't see anything damage in the crossover , should I recap it anyways ? ( I have pretty much all the components ) change to film caps in the process ? ( I have many lying around but dunno if they are going to do any good)

I have read about voice coil misalignment with this tweeters, should I try to align better the one that is working ?, how do you exactly do that ?

should I expect a deep clear sounding bass from this speakers ? seems to me that my shitty broken Hitachi speakers sounds better.

The tweeter probably burned out to abuse, the amp it was connected to might have been driven to clipping. It's unlikely that anything in the crossover would have caused it. These speakers are from the late 1970s, right (I'm on a slow connection right now so can't do a proper search)? They might be due for a recap, but I'd ensure that you can source a replacement tweeter first before putting the effort into it.
 
is it possible to repair, or buy the voice coil?

if I have access to sb-7000s tweeters, should I do the upgrade?

Finding a replacement voice coil would be an extremely long shot, IMO. Repair is possible if the burned portion is very close to where the leads connect to the coil. If you only need to unwind one or two turns of wire then it would probably work without affecting the driver's characteristics too much (when you remove turns of wire you of course lower the resistance of the coil). This is outside of my area of expertise but I've seen threads on AK where other people have done it. Certainly not a job for beginners. If you can find a speaker shop, it's possible that they might be able to do the repair (I've had similar work done on a subwoofer).

This thread says the SB-6000 and SB-7000 use the same tweeters.

ETA: These tweeters are expensive, I see. There are none currently for sale on eBay, but in August, one sold for US$76 and another for US$100.

If you need one of those 2" cast frame cone tweeters I would be glad to just give you my last one. PM me. Finding them is almost impossible!
As for how they get blown- usually when the volume knob exceeds the common sense knob between ones ears!! I.E. pushing distortion.......
Changing he caps to fresh polys will help as those electrolytic age poorly after 15~20 years!
