I'm a new addition as of this evening to this forum. I've been a bit of a lurker for a month or so now but knew I'd have to take the plunge and introduce myself. I'm relatively new to the audio scene but I've been an avid listener of most formats for more than a few decades. I found my way here in a rather unusual way. My son took an interest in a movie. He asked for a toy guitar from the movie Coco. He and I saw it a few times together and I thought why not get him into a real guitar? So I bought a nice Taylor GS Mini figuring we could both learn at the same time. As most of you probably already suspect, the boys interests wained. But mine flourished. I couldn't help but practice every night. I started to learn from youtube as well as I found a local teacher. Flash forward six months and I find myself really digging into the creative side of songs and one video leads to another. The next thing I am looking at is tube amps. I almost buy an Elekit TU-8600 tied to AER BD2 drivers but have a less than revealing test listen at the sellers home so I abandon this. This was likely due to the selection of music which we listened to but I couldn't get it out of my head. I should have brought my own source material but I didn't feel comfortable imposing on a very generous person.
A month later and I start recalling my childhood in the 70's thinking of the amazing sounding systems my friends parents relatives had and then of the first album I bought, Dark Side of the Moon, and brought home to listen to on my Realistic all in one radio, turntable and 8 track player with my Koss open headphones. Nostalgia kicks in. I then learn that I live very near a company called Schiit Audio so I take a morning off and head over to their listening store. I end up picking up a small headphone tube amp setup including the Valhalla 2 paired with the Bifrost Multibit DAC. I listen to this through a pair of Sennheiser 660S open headphones which I find to be more warm, open and revealing than my PSB M4U closed backs I've been using for all those youtube vids and iPhone music. I'm mostly listening via Spotify as my personal collection is on iTunes. Some of which I ripped from a CD I owned and others bought from the store. Next thing I know I'm researching receivers and can't decide which way to go. I decided to buy a Pioneer SX 5590, the European version of the SX 1250. I guess it's a bit overkill but I don't think I realized exactly what it was when I bid on it. It's yet to ship but I'm very excited to get it. I've already built a bit of a listening studio in a room which I play the guitar in. It was a bit hard surfaced so I went back to the search engine and watched some videos. I then built five 2' x 4' x 3" deep acoustic panels out of MDF with mineral wool and acoustic fabric coverings. I fit these in the room at the first and second reflections for both left and right as well as one behind my guitar amp. Next I'll be on the hunt for some speakers. I think I'm on the right forum for this so look out for my next post. I'm here and thirsty for knowledge!
