New Turntable- help

While you guys argue over the merits of turntables from different parts of the globe, it is not likely going to be of much use to Lori. She's looking for advice on local (relatively) turntables and trying not to spend even $300. I don't anticipate she wants to get one shipped from overseas and have to deal with that expense AND the hassle of electrical compatibility.

Those Hitachi's are simple and easy to work on if it's needed. I'd go for the Hitachi first to at least get you started if you can make sure it gets packed right as has been mentioned. Then when you get it let us know here what cartridge it has and you can see about a better cartridge or stylus if needed. Once that's done hopefully it will work out so you'll have more for your speaker budget.

Thanks all! The Hitachi sold :( so now I am with the Technics or back to square one . . . (I am in Wellington!)

Hi Mike, thanks. I'm new here so how to do I private message? A SL-1600Mk2 would be amazing, but sadly I have no time or experience to fix one up. I kind of need something that's in good shape and ready to go.

hmmmm i have some goodman magnums if those are good speakers in your book? how about a sl-d3 ?think its got a stanton 500 or some ortofon cart fitted at moment,
click on my pic and i think it tells you how to pm me

The cartridge on the Technics SL 3310 is either a Audio Technica CN5625AL or they offered me a Technics 270c (no clue about either really).

I'd go for the Technics, which was probably the original one supplied with that deck and can be upgraded at a later date. The AT is one of their entry level models with a basic conical stylus, so the Technics would be better.

Being in small country like yours, you can only get decent TT by luck. Do not be afraid and buy across the border. Even in Australia you can get better TT than locally. We live in globalisation time- use the positive side of it while you can.
