New Turntable with Pics

Here is the Sony PS-636 I picked up yesterday. You know the story from my other post. I bought a guys records and he had this table. Went back to pick up the table and he also had a pristine set of Boston acoustics. Bought them both for $70.

Anyway, I need to get some info on this table. Hopefully someone here can help. It appears to have the original Sony cartridge. I don't see any model number or anything on the cartridge. All I can tell you is that it's yellow and looks to be in really good shape. The guy said he probably didn't play 50 records on this thing and he is the original owner. The table is in perfect working order but I haven't really had a chance to hear it. Tonight i'll put it through the paces with some less valuable records.

I really need to know what to set the counterweight and anti-skate setting at and if it's possible to get a new cartridge.

that is ONE NICE TABLE!! as far as settings go, i'd start with balancing the arm, then go with 1.5/1.5 tracking forces. and before you do that, give that stylus a really good look, and try it first on a record you don't care about.
 
Lamp at the back appears to be in approximately the correct position to aid the user in manually cueing the tonearm in dimly lit situations.

Don't know much about it, except from your other thread, but that sure is a purdy thing, in its interesting retro-tech (for lack of a better term) way! Seems to be a pretty good TT. Congratulations!

Looking forward to hearing your impressions of it, after you've got it set up and well listened-to.

Congrats on the cool find!....and on the Bostons!....What model Bostons did you get?
 
The Boston's were HD8's in dead mint condition. I gave them to my dad. He was looking for some nice bookshelf speakers so he got hooked up. Does anyone know a place I can find out some more on the turntable?

dude, those are some KICK ASS speakers! i've been looking for a mint pair of HD8's myself! you're a good son!!!
 
Looks quite serviceable. I like the 'Computerized' moniker... Oooooooh! How 80's!!! It's got a Com-PEW-ter! Hal is spinning vinyl! :D

All part of the fun. Interesting green strobe, that's a new one...I've seen red and orange, but not green.

An unusual find, enjoy!
 
Yeah, the speakers, HD8's, didn't do it for me. I compared them to my little Paradigm Atom monitors with a 5" driver and the boston's got ate for breakfast. Sound quality that is. The Boston's will play louder with the 8 but they lacked a tasty midrange and honestly didn't have the punch I expected for an 8" driver. They will be great for my dad as he mostly listens to rock.

Hey SL, I hoped you would see the pics of my table. It's weird huh? I think i'm in love. I didn't get the table hooked up til late last night so I couldn't play it at a reasonable volume but I put on Jean Luc Ponty and the table sounds good. Tonight i'll give it a good dusting and clean the stylus good and i'll get back to you on my overall thoughts.
 
That light in the back may be to autosense the record size. Does the platter mat have slits in it? That is a super cool TT & it looks like it would have been part of a "system." Sony was big on "systems" in the 80's.

Nice looking rig , good score . funny I picked up a pair of Paradigm titans for $70 a few years ago and ended up giving them to sister . every time I go over to her chalet I am impressed by how good they sound for such a small speaker .
Sony cart eh ? Did At make them maybe ?
 
I have had a chance to listen to this table on a few records. I cleaned the stylus with the magic eraser and under magnification it looks perfect and shiny. I expected it to have some buildup but it's clean. I believe the guy when he said he didn't use it much.

I played a Thrift store copy of Fleetwood Mac-rumors, Joni Mitchell-Miles of Aisles and I'm listening to George Benson-Breezin right now. The table is actually scary good in comparison to my Expression III. Friday night i'm going to get into a few beers and bring it upstairs to give it a side by side comparison on my main system with the Pro-Ject. I'll let you know the results.

I see someone mentioned the cartridge may be made by AT. I would be very interested to find that out for sure.
 
AT made several Sony-branded carts. The model number might be on the top of the cart, up against the headshell. If you take a look, you'd have to re-align the cart.
