New Vintage set-up...pls help.

Hello All,

I have recently put together a basic vintage hi-fi set up using my father's old Toshiba SA-514.
For starters, I am missing a push knob and have no idea where to get it. Pic. attached. Pls Help!

My father who passed away a couple of years ago was very proud of his system. The receiver which I thought was gone forever, recently turned up. After seeing that it was in working condition, I purchased two Large advent speakers and an Audio Reflex MR-109. Please see pic. attached.

The problem I am having is that I'm getting a humming sound when either one of the two phono inputs is selected. When I move the turntable away from the receiver, the humming subsides quite a bit, but it's still there. Any thoughts or suggestions to fix this problem?

Not much idea on the button, maybe try subscribing and posting a want-to-buy on bartertown. Is the turntable ground wire connected?

Nice looking gear you have there.
 
Thanks for the quick reply faber12. As far as I know, the turntable is internally grounded. The TT doesn't have a ground wire that comes out, only the Left and Right (red and white) wires.
 
Usually there is a grounding wire that runs from the turntable to the preamp/receiver. Maybe try adding one? Just as a test try attaching a wire to the ground on the receiver and touching it to metal on the tonearm hinge or the like.

Does it do this even without the turntable powered up?
 
Well...I took your advice and connected a wire to the ground and before I touched the TT, I noticed the humming was gone. So, I just left the wire connected to the receiver. Thank you so much. It was driving me crazy. What should I do with the other end of the wire now?
 
I would try to connect it internally to the turntable, or redo the internal ground on the TT. Glad it is gone, either way.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in, and explain what is actually happening. I feel like we just treated the symptom, not the problem.
 
Welcome here, by the way...

You might try asking in the turntable section, there will probably be more traffic and knowledgeable people there for this issue.

The set looks very nice. When it sounds good it is definitely worth using it.
To get the sound better, I mean get the most out of the system there are a few things you can do:
Make sure the turntable, a very nice one, is grounded.
Take the turntable of the receiver, it will decrease the humming.
Check and clean all the connections, inputs and speakers.
Take the speaker of the floor. Best sound with the tweeters on ear hight.
Make sure the styles looks good, new. and make sure the connections of the cartridge are clean and connected.

From the pic, I could not see the "push knob"? I am supposing you are referring to the power switch. If so, you can probably find a comparable switch via Parts Express.. or google "Toshiba-power-switch".. this should provide some leads.

I did a recent search for a "restored" Mac ST-150 and its power switch.. and found dozens of manufactures for the same. Apparently these push button switches were common to the receiver/amps of their day.

If not successful, you may be able to engineer a switch via on-line parts order. Of course, you will need the wire diagram for the Toshiba.

Just as another note, my Mac... when I went into the unit, I found the switch to be good. Seems the extension, just outside of the faceplate, broke off and the user pushed the button in.. then taped it over.
Go figure... :idea:.. worked for him?

50nstillhifi the knob that I'm missing is phono input 2 on the right side of the receiver. See pic. Still don't know how to find this elusive button. Also, R-know, what is the best way to clean the connections? Any advice on speaker wire gauge? The wire I have now barely fits in the receiver. Too thick. Thanks all for the compliments

Oh excuse... I do see it.

That's an OEM finished part you would want... gonna take some research but in all these states of America ... someone is going to have one for you!
