New Year's Turntable Woes

Hello All,

I inherited a Nakamichi CR-3A and a B&O Beogram 1800 from my brother who passed, and just finished replacing the belts on the CR-3A with help from an excellent YouTube tutorial. Unfortunately, had less luck getting the 1800 up and running. Replacing the belt was relatively easy, but when reassembled, the platter sat too low, making the record actually touch the surface of the turntable. Tried to find some help in various places and can't seem to get any direct advice on what's wrong and how to fix it. In the meantime, another problem crept up, the tone arm will move over to the record and descend. Then it stays for a few rotations and then returns to standby position and the turntable stops. Is this actually an unrelated problem or does it have something to do with the original problem? Thanks!

I would think they are separate problems. Any idea if this turntable has been in use recently? If not, it could be that there are bad capacitors or other components that are creating the latter problem. I would go slow in trying address your concerns with the B&O, and be aware that the replacement cartridges for these are very pricey, so be very careful in handing the cartridge, lest something were to inadvertently happen to the stylus.

Lift the platter off, there are 3 flat-head screws. Turn those to adjust the platter height and thus the suspension. Regarding the problem with the tone-arm, you need to have a record on the pop-up 45 adapter or else it acts weird. That confuses me for ages... Before you go along and do anything, look at the service manual, while I hate B&O's policy regarding parts & service, they make great service-manuals that are free to access online.

Make sure that you have the transport screws unlocked. (see below from the Owner's Manual)
