Newb looking at a set of ADS L810s (need help)

Hi Folks!

I just joined up yesterday based on a recommendation from my dad. The audio bug has firmly planted its teeth in the obsessive part of my brain. So I’m hoping to use this place as a resource to avoid being fleeced by a dressed up vintage wood box with rusted cones and a side of rat piss. That being said, anybody got some insight on how to ferret out a quality set of ADS L810s with the naked ear/eye?

Here’s the link (REMOVED)

If they’re a good buy, they’d be paired with the following:
Sansui AU-555a
Thorens TD-145 w/Ortofon OM-20

Thanks for the help in advance...

With regard to you question, they look decent although the cabinets look like they were refinished as they look a little light to me. The domes on the woofs and tweets look decent as well. The price is on the upper side of what I have seen these go for in the last couple years.

I own a pair that are a slightly different vintage. I have very much enjoyed them and think they are a very nice speaker. If you are going to spend that much and have the room, you might hold out for a L1290/2 or the L1230 which come around the $500 figure when they show up. Most would consider that upgrade to be an easy one for the difference in price.

I always love the ads with "rare" in the title. As if the word itself somehow promotes added value.

Bottom line.........the price is on the upper end of the CL market, but $250 could be considered a hurry up and get them price, so that's not that big a spread. They are a nice set of speakers. If the seller has them up for audition, take a couple of your favorite tracks and give them a really good listen. Spend the fifteen minutes listening to see what you really think. At that price you should really like them or it would be a definite pass. The asking price is not in the realm of ridiculous, but you might not be able to sell them tomorrow for what you paid.

Thank you for the thorough response! (Apologies for the inclusion of the CL link). I appreciate the help and will keep an eye out for the L1290/2 or L1230s. The seller lives a pretty good haul away from where I live, so I’ll probably pass on these. In the meantime, I’ll continue researching and asking questions.

Not sure where you live but based on the area from the CL listing you posted if your around New Jersey you can find some L1290's in Old Bridge. One mid looks very slightly dented, so you may negotiate a slightly better price?.

One more thing, .... if your close to NY City, .... invest in the $25.00 membership fee here and look up the member selling a nice pair of L1530's in Barter Town. Then, get a pick up and grab your very wise Dad and take a road trip with him. Stop off in any of those wonderful Italian Restaurants and have lunch together. Then, go get those L1530's are at the top of the ADS pecking order.

They're not quite at the very top...... 1590's, 2030's M30's.....but they're a damn fine speaker and well worth his asking price and a significant upgrade over the 810's the op was thinking about.
