Newbie from Minnesota

Hi everyone, greetings from the frozen wasteland known as Minnesota. I'm still kind of a newbie when it comes to stereo equipment, although I've been collecting equipment and records for about 10 years now. My record collection is nearing 1000 and I have old turntables and receivers hidden in various corners. Most of my equipment has been culled from garage sales and thrift shops. For now my current setup is thus:

Receiver: Pioneer Sx-770, found at a thrift store for $40
Turntable: Toshiba SR-F100, found at a thrift store for $15
Speakers: Some Sansui something or other, found at a garage sale for $10.
Reel to Reel: Tandberg 64x, found in mint condition with service manual and original owner's manual for $15 at thrift store.

Any info you can give me on my equipment would be appreciated; I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the exciting world of stereo sound, and this forum looks like a great resource. I look forward to spending more time here.

Welcome to AK.

You will find there are many active Minnesota members here on AK. We usually have some sort of get together once or twice a year to eat food, drink, swap gear, show off our toys and talk audio. :blah:

The Introduction Forum is pretty much for saying "hello, here I am". If you have specific questions about your gear, you can post threads in the appropriate forums.

From your list of audio gear (and 1000 records!?) it sure sounds like you have "the Fever"! :thmbsp:
 
Thanks for all the welcomes. 1000 may have been a bit of an exaggeration just from eyeballing my many crates and cabinets full of records, it's probably closer to 500. Still, I love records, there's a certain charm to them that cd's and digital audio can't quite capture. Digital sounds lifeless compared to the warm full sound of vinyl. Plus, nothing beats the feeling of finding a rare record at a garage sale for 25 cents.

I love music in general, I'm the kind of person who isn't tied down to one genre or style, but rather I like music as a whole. My records range from classic rock to jazz to country to punk to new wave. I'm also the kind of person who's not ashamed of the music I listen to; some people seem to think that liking certain bands means you have no musical taste. Musical taste is subjective; I listen to artists whom I like the sound of regardless of how others view that band. For example, I love the band Chumbawamba. Most people only know them from their one major hit from the 90's, "Tubthumping," but they have an extensive catalog of songs, having released more than a dozen records before Tubthumping made them famous. Most people would think "you like Chumbawamba? They suck, how can you stand to listen to that?" however, that doesn't stop me from religiously collecting their records, I even have one that they never released to the public, most of the copies of which belong to the former guitarist.
 
Welcome to the Minnesota contingent of AK!! There's a number of members in the metro area...and a surprising number of us out in the hinterlands. Less garage sale competition out in the sticks.
