Newbie here-Just scored a Akai 280D-SS

Just scored a system put together around 1975 and NOT stored in a damp basement. Included is a Akai 280D-SS.

Due to logistics will not have in-house until September 1..

What would be the first things YOU would do.

Just retied from a 30+ year IT/Admin/computer guy career. Very comfortable with a soldier gun and just ordered my re-work station.

Get the Service Manual and User Manual by registering at HiFiEngine (no affiliation).
Plug it in and test.
Start with basics. Clean and relube any sliding parts in transport. Lubricate motors. Thoroughly clean heads and rest of tape path. Demag heads. Treat pots with Deoxit. Clean pinch roller. Adjust reel tables if necessary to get tape to spool into the center of the reel.

If these things are unfamiliar, read up on this forum-lots of threads on how to complete them.

Oh yes-be sure you have a known good tape to test with. I suggest a reel of Maxell UDXL-very stable and easy to find used. The 'Bay" is easy and convenient.

Thank-you! Especially the Maxwell suggestion. I was wondering what tape to get to to start out with. Maxell was my go to cassette back in the day..
 
I have the service manual but it seems to be a low res scan of a poor quality photocopy. It may just be me are but the illustrations are simply unreadable. At some point in the near future will be looking for an original and have no problem putting together a quality .pdf and getting it out there.
